witter, Facebook and YouTube are not the only players in the web-space that are analysing trends and improvising. Modi government has also taken to trending on social media in a big way to know how the government is performing.

Prime minister Narendra Modi has set up a system of weekly analysis reports to know what is emerging on the social media about him and his government. The exercise being performed by the ministry of information and broadcasting under the new media cell (NMC) and before going to the PMO is also vetted by the union home ministry.

Sources said the exercise is being done to gauge the mood of the public on announcements, schemes that various ministries engage in and the impact of the utterances made by the ministers or leaders and on the basis of it understand what are the emerging strengths and pitfalls for the government and on that basis nuance the strategy of the government.

Compete with Private Channels: Venkaiah to DD

Published: 28th September 2014 06:01 AM

VIJAYAWADA: Union minister for urban development M Venkaiah Naidu has asked the Doordarshan to improve its quality to compete with private channels especially in providing news at the earliest without making any compromise on credibility.

Speaking at the DD Saptagiri channel rededication programme here Saturday, he said that DD was protecting its credibility in presenting news with accuracy. On the other hand, he appealed to the private news channels not to sensationalise news.
Venkaiah Naidu pointed out that within three months of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the truncated AP state had got its separate DD channel Saptagiri and an upgraded DD TV studio.

Maintain standards, Venkaiah tells private broadcasters

VIJAYAWADA, September 28, 2014, V. RAGHAVENDRA
onopoly of AIR, DD was over long ago: Chandrababu

Union Minister for Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs M. Venkaiah Naidu exhorted All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan (DD) to adapt to the changing trends and try to report news as speedily as private media organisations do while maintaining standards.

He appealed to private television channels to desist from making news sensational as they could withstand competition only by winning credibility but not by scrambling for TRPs.

Addressing the inaugural function of DD Saptagiri channel here on Saturday, Mr. Naidu said the good old days when people used to converge at public places to listen to AIR news and watch DD at homes were gone but they were not completely out of reckoning as they were still known for values and standards. However, the public sector broadcasters have to make necessary changes in their content and ensure that they kept pace with the private channels.

He appealed to the private channels to be realistic in disseminating information and news which should productively engage people. "Some programmes on television, which become an inseparable part of our lives, spoil our minds. Their impact is so profound that they drive people to commit suicide", he observed and suggested due priority should be given to development news. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu thanked Mr. Venkaiah Naidu for his efforts in getting DD station to be set up in the capital of Andhra Pradesh, which he said was a good beginning for the establishment of many such government institutions and organisations in the capital city.

Saying that AIR and DD were 'original brands' of Indian media, he reminded that these were not the days of their monopoly as more than 800 television channels have come up across the country and making the competition hotter were Facebook and Twitter.

The Narendra Modi government is planning a two-pronged approach to reach out to the rural as well as the urban population. While a New Media Cell (NMC), to be set up under the I&B ministry, will gauge the mood of the urban public through social media sites, the PMO is planning to tap All India Radio (AIR) to reach out to a billion-plus Indians.

The AIR programme, likely to be called 'Man Ki Baat', will go on air from October 3. Later, Modi may get answer citizens' questions directly as he did during his address on Teachers' Day, said sources. It's likely to be a fortnightly or weekly programme, sources said.

Ironically, the decision to create NMC was taken by the UPA government in August 2013, but it could hardly derive any benefit from it.

Kashmir floods or play field for journalists

By Adfar Shah

Ferocious floods recently hit Kashmir through continuous rains spread over a period of seven days sequentially inundating South, Central and North Kashmir. Fourteen breaches on the bunds of Jhelum River filled the areas starting from Pantha Chowk to Bemina with areas such as Batwara, Indra Nagar, Sonwar, Rajbagh, Jawahar Nagar, Dal Gate, Lal Chowk, Press Colony, Gogji Bagh and so on. Civil administration was so foxed and paralysed that except for holding meetings, the Chief Minister and his government handed over the situation to Army and other rescue agencies while personally acting as a volunteer. Besides the opposition brigade had not much role to play except creating space for themselves.

Having said that, Kashmir floods became a perfect narrative for a typical television story. Visuals to drive anyone in pain and dismay were shown continuously. So literally September 4, onwards here it was - Kashmir floods becoming the play ground for Delhi breed of journalists. The who's who of all television channels was desperate to be seen in Srinagar at least.

News reader, actor and stage performer S. Varadharajen talks about his chequered career

There was a time when news anchors had a huge fan following. From the commanding tone of Tamizhanban to the powerful voice of Shobana Ravi, each one had a distinct identity. With his pleasing demeanour and tremendous voice clarity, S. Varadharajen is one of the few to etch his name in the higher echelons of news reading on Doordarshan's Tamil channel. He is better known as 'TV' Varadharajen.

His voice was so gratifying that once actor Rajnikanth specifically wanted Varadharajen to read a news bulletin for his film Arunachalam. "I was pleasantly surprised to hear that he asked for my voice," he says. With that came string of opportunities to read news bulletins in films.

"I also have the dubious distinction of reading the obits of famous personalities. When famous actor and singer K.B. Sundarambal died, I was glad that I was not on duty. But then I got a call from my colleague Shobana Ravi to substitute her as she was not well," he laughs.

PM Narendra Modi pilots live radio show to reach the masses

India's Twitter-savvy Prime Minister Narendra Modi is turning to the country's oldest radio station to make his voice heard even in the farthest Himalayan hamlets and most distant deserts.

On October 3, Modi will go live on public service All India Radio (AIR) from New Delhi for about 50 minutes, in a pilot of a show he hopes will become a weekly opportunity to reach up to two-thirds of India's 1.2 billion people.

The maiden radio broadcast, announced on the website mygov.in, will be quickly translated into 24 Indian languages and 16 foreign ones. "We are still working on how to get everything arranged," said a senior official at the radio station known for news broadcasts delivered in a cut-glass English accent.

"None of the prime ministers in the last three decades have used our services in this manner."

Soon, Modi may be beamed live on DD, AIR straight from 7 RCR

Zia Haq, Hindustan Times  New Delhi, September 25, 2014

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's October 3 address on All India Radio may mark the beginning of a new trend that would see him frequently turning to state broadcasters for communicating with the public on key issues.

The Modi government's communication strategy of relying more on state-owned media has got Doordarshan (DD) and All India Radio (AIR) all tuned up though DD continues to battle for autonomy apart from staffing problems and resource allocation.

Power of radio: Fever FM facilitates J&K rescue operations

The radio station helped reunite several people separated from their families during the devastating floods

BestMediaInfo Bureau | Mumbai | September 24, 2014

Since the time private FM radio stations mushroomed across the length and breadth of the country, detractors have had more than one reason to dismiss it as yet another entertainment platform that is all gloss and no glory.
But young Gul and Manasha will always remember radio as that uncredited sidekick which played a pivotal role in their lives. Stuck in the devastating floods of Jammu & Kashmir, when Manasha got separated from her younger sister Gul and her family, she found an unlikely saviour in the team of Fever 104 FM. Their whereabouts were relayed to the Western Air Command PRO by the radio station, and, in a few hours, Manasha was reunited with her family.
The story of Gul and Manasha is a testimony that when a radio station decides to swim against the current and do what is intrinsic to its DNA – be a medium of mass communication – it brings about a change that was not fathomed, even by the most dedicated loyalists of the medium.

AIR braves floodwaters in J&K

Posted on: 24/09/2014 06:18 PM   Chandni Mathur

MUMBAI: Though a major chunk of metro listeners have shunned All India Radio for private FM, the public radio broadcaster has proved its mettle by braving the raging floodwaters in Jammu & Kashmir for the past few weeks.

September 2014 was when the picturesque J&K region was hit by torrential rainfall which led to the worst floods in 60 years in the region. The rising waters slowly broke down the mediums of communication which also included Radio Kashmir that never went silent in the last six decades.

Even when the flood hit the state, AIR was constantly providing updated information to aid in the rescue of people. However, it too was not spared the flood's rage and the entire AIR building was submerged in water.

How India Mounted the World’s Cheapest Mission to Mars

Courtesy: blogs.wsj.com

If India's Mangalyaan space probe successfully enters an orbit around Mars on Wednesday, the country will have made history – twice.

It will be the only nation so far to reach Mars on its first attempt. It will also have spent the least amount of money to do so.

India's Mars mission has a price tag of about $74 million, a fraction of the $671 million cost of the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration's latest Mars program.

A success would be an important advertisement for a business India hopes to enter: sending satellites and spacecraft aloft at a fraction of the cost of U.S. and European competitors.

In June, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi boasted that India has spent less to reach Mars than Hollywood producers spent on the movie "Gravity," which cost $100 million to make.

PM to connect with people through radio on Oct 3

New Delhi, Sep 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will connect with people via a radio programme that will be held on October 3 on the Vijaya Dashmi day. "Received many ideas and suggestions for my forthcoming radio programme. Have decided to hold the first programme on 3rd October at 11:00 AM," Modi said in a post on social networking site 'twitter'. In another tweet in Hindi, Modi said "3 October ko aap sabhi se radio par kuch man ki baatein karunga" (On 3rd October, I will share some of my thoughts with all of you).

The programme is expected to be broadcast by All India Radio. The radio programme comes days after the Prime Minister's address on the Teacher's day was telecast across the country. On September 17, after two busy and eventful days in Gujarat, the Prime Minister had spent over an hour personally replying to people who greeted him on his birthday. The Prime Minister is also expected to share his thoughts on a variety of issues during the upcoming radio programme. "A separate Open Forum has been created on MyGov for citizens to share their comments for the forthcoming radio programme: http://mygov.Nic.In/groupissue/pm-on-radio-on-3rd-october-2014 -at-1100-am/show," an official statement said.

Face new challenges everyday : Jawhar Sircar

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2014

Shares Jawhar Sircar, Chief Executive Officer, Prasar Bharati and Secretary to the
Government of India. In an interview to Tushar Jain, Amity Institute of Biotechnology, he
encourages change and talks about the challenges faced by the national and India's largest
public service broadcaster and the path to conquer them

The Prasar Bharati Act has been in the limelight for quite sometime. What's your take on it?
The Prasar Bharati Act is modelled on public service broadcasting acts of the world like the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the NHK of Japan, and Public Service Broadcasting, USA. Whenever a change is enacted, achieving a mission takes precedence over the commercial aspect. With our initiative of setting up radio stations in remote areas, we don't expect 'FM returns'. Every organisation has two set of people— one who welcome change, and the other, who are not as welcoming. The major challenge lies in devising a way out which is best for an organisation since everyone cannot be satisfied.

How does Prasar Bharati reach out to the youth?
We began programmes like 'Lunch time variety' and 'Yuvawani' when we were new to the radio, but lost the plot somewhere down the line. Then came FM Rainbow and FM Gold. We are very particular about the kind of language we use keeping the Act
in mind. There are other ways of reaching out to the youth, such as social media. We have been on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube since six months. It is important to connect to youth in their own language.

Guest Times: PPV on digital cable poised to be biggest wave with DAS

Courtesy: www.bestmediainfo.com

Significant subscription revenues will be driven by VAS which will push subscription revenues over Rs 6 trillion crore with PPV. DAS has thrown up multiple challenges around the last mile and the mother of all challenges has been acclimatisation of LCOs

Ashish Kaul | Mumbai | September 18, 2014

The in-market subscription revenue for C&S market is likely to cross Rs 6 trillion crore by the end of the next financial year. Digitisation is going to change the subscription revenue model forever with industry entering a quasi-consumer domain for the first time since its debut in the Indian market since the first Gulf War over 20 years ago.
The subscription revenue landscape has radically changed and will continue to do so at least for next 24 months amidst serious challenges from rival DTH brethren. The industry is undergoing a metamorphosis on various fronts. The first step is to accept that the business has shifted to the consumer domain and driven entirely by consumer marketing benchmarks. The digitization has opened a whole new world of subscription revenue opportunities that didn't exist before, thus creating a win-win situation for LCOs, MSOs and Broadcasters together. The industry is on a precipice and it can either emerge as the largest consumer services and VAS driven as the largest VAS subscription revenue aggregator in the world or lose out to DTH. The industry size is expected to touch Rs 120 million C&S consumers by the end of 2015-16.

Radio Kashmir keeps hope afloat, unites divided families

Nazeer Ahmad (55), a desperate father whose daughter went missing since September 7, changed boats and buses several times to reach Srinagar from cut-off south Kashmir's Anantnag district on Friday. His only hope to trace her daughter was trekking the peak of the Shankar Achrya hill, east of the city.

Perched at the height of 1,000 feet above the marooned Srinagar city, the small makeshift one-room recording centre of Radio Kashmir has emerged as a single window to unite hundreds of the flood-ravaged divided families and keep the population connected with whatever remained of the administration.

"On reaching Srinagar, I trekked the hill to pass on the message of my missing daughter who studies at Srinagar's Government Medical College. Last time we spoke was Sunday, the day water took over the premises of the college. Since then there was no clue: if they were evacuated or still stuck there or met any mishap," said Ahmad.

Though the government has now appointed former journalist P.V. Suryakumar as the chairperson and head of the 13-member board, it still needs to fill the positions of seven part-time members to get the organisation back on track.

Suryakumar succeeds Mrinal Pande as Prasar Bharati's chairperson.
