100 days of the I&B Ministry
MUMBAI: Outlining its initiatives on the completion of 100 days of the Narendra Modi-led government, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has sketched out the key initiatives undertaken by it to propel the growth of the media and entertainment (M&E) industry. On the third and fourth phases of cable TV digitisation, the ministry has constituted a task force to steer digitisation of about 8 crore or 80 million cable TV homes in the remaining two phases.
According to the ministry, it marks a step towards the Prime Minister's dream of a digital India as digitisation will enable quick penetration of broadband connectivity in India. The ministry also claimed to have taken efforts to fulfil the long-pending demand of domestic manufacturers to get tax concession (C-Form benefit) in order to compete with imported set-top boxes (STBs). The ministry said that it has simplified procedures of acquiring licences for existing broadcasters as channels which have already sought security clearance along with the their boards of directors do not have to seek further security clearance. This decision has paved the way for speedy clearance of additional television channel permissions.
