SUMMARY

Theatre veteran Feroz Abbas Khan on his directorial debut on television, Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon, on Doordarshan

I was not very attracted to the idea of making anything for television. So when I got a call for this serial on Doordarshan, which was fundamentally about social messages, it got me thinking. I took it up as a challenge. I saw some stunning work done in South America and South Africa, even in Japan, where they used the language of soap opera for sending out important messages. But when they do that they never forget that primarily the show is for entertainment. This show could be my last television serial because I don’t see myself directing serials day in and day out. It’s not just a serial, it’s much more than that. Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon is a very important show in terms of gender issues, women empowerment, sex determination, sex selection, early marriage, early and repeated pregnancies and domestic violence in Indian society. The story revolves around the inspiring journey of Sneha Mathur, a doctor working in Mumbai. She represents the young Indian woman of today who thrives on challenges. As the story progresses, Sneha returns to her village and find herself embroiled in a series of family dramas. Sneha’s sense of family responsibility, along with her ability to respond to challenges around her, makes her a role model for many young women who face similar realities. The serial will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it will make you think.

For me it’s not just a serial, it is a part of an important vision and initiative taken up by Population Foundation of India, which is trying to bring about a change in the mindset of masses about women. We are primarily targeting small towns and that is the reason we chose to broadcast this show on Doordarshan. Television is......................

Prasar Bharati will have to wait for autonomy

Source: SmartInvastors.in | Manu Balachandran
New Delhi 27 Feb 14

In the last week of January, a committee headed by Sam Pitroda, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's advisor on public information, submitted its report on restructuring the operations of Prasar Bharati, India's public broadcaster. The mandate given to Pitroda almost a year ago was to suggest measures to make the broadcaster profitable and streamline its operations. (Every year, Prasar Bharati's revenues fall short of its expenses by about Rs 500 crore; the shortfall is made good by the government.) However, according to Prasar Bharati officers, the submission of the report was deliberately delayed by more than two months, despite it being ready, so that the current government will not have to implement any of its recommendations because the Election Commission's model code of conduct for the general elections will soon kick in. The general view is that the government doesn't want to give up the captive medium, especially when it needs all possible help for the upcoming elections.

The need to free the broadcaster from the clutches of the government has been felt for long. But the Union information & broadcasting ministry has resisted any such attempt. It even questioned an attempt by Prasar Bharati to convert four Hindi channels of Doordarshan - Lucknow, Jaipur, Patna and Bhopal - into 24-hour channels in order to generate additional revenue. This prompted Prasar Bharati CEO Jawahar Sircar to write to Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari last year. "Is there any serious displeasure in the ministry that Prasar Bharati is reviving these four moribund kendras in the Hindi belt after decades of de facto inactivity and continuous drainage of the public exchequer," wrote an irate Sircar. "[Thus] attempting sincerely to bridge the huge gap or annual loss of Rs 66 crore, trying to optimise utilisation of properties of 56,000 square metre valued at approximately Rs 418 crore, utilising 1,163 employees in these four stations when two studios each were telecasting for 2-3 hours a day?"

It was only recently that Tewari and Sircar patched up.

Universal concepts : Dr. K.S. Pavitra

Dr. K.S. Pavitra

The story of the life of Christ was ably portrayed in a Bharatanatya recital

Christa Kavya - Exploring Life and Teachings of Jesus Christ through Kannada Literature and in the Language of Bharathanatya, a solo, conceived and presented by Dr. K.S. Pavitra, was staged in Bangalore recently, under the joint auspices of Srivijaya Kalanikethana, Shimoga, All India Radio and Ananya. The source material for the performance was from the book ‘Christakavya’, and included, among others, verses by Kuvempu, Bendre, Chennavira Kanavi, Gopalakrishna Kolthaya and Basava Bhakta. Competent orchestral support was provided by Dr.K.S. Shubrata (nattuvanga), Mahesh Swami (vocal), Janardan Rao (mridanga), K.S.J ayaram (flute),and Karthik (rhythm pads). The recital was anchored by Dr.K.S. Chaitra.

Commencing with the beginning of creation, the advent of light, of the sun, the moon and the stars, of animals, birds and fishes, the presentation reflected the exuberance and excitement of the first stirrings of life. The innocence of Adam and Eve, and their fall from grace after being tempted to eat the forbidden fruit, were convincingly portrayed. Noah and his ark, and the onset of the deluge also formed part of the narrative, as did the birth of Jesus, the massacre of infants by Herod, and the role of Mary as protector and nurturer. Instances of Jesus’ compassion and love culminated in an eloquent portrayal of the deliverance of Mary Magdalene from a vengeful and bloodthirsty crowd.

The Last Supper, the betrayal by Judas, the crucifixion, and..............

For this, Radioandmusic.com spoke to Leeladhar Mandloi, ex-Director General of All India Radio, who has been with Prasar Bharti for over 37 years.

Seasoned theatre and film director Feroz Abbas Khan talks about his maiden television serial “Mai Kuch Bhi Kar Sakthi Hoon”

Renowned for directing Gandhi, My Father and plays such as Saalgirah, Tumhari Amrita, Salesman Ramlal and Gandhi Viruddh Gandhi, Feroz Abbas Khan, is now donning a new role — that of directing a 52-episode trans-media (comprising television, radio, Internet and mobile phones) serial Mai Kuch Bhi Kar Sakthi Hoon (MKBKSH). To be telecast on Doordarshan from March 8, the International Women’s Day, the serial aims to enhance knowledge and change perception and attitudes on social determinants of health to eventually contribute in improving demand, access and quality of reproductive health in India. The neglect of gender issues, like preventing early marriages, early and repeated pregnancies, under-nutrition of girls, domestic violence and sensitisation of boys, too, will be dealt with.

The wide reach and influence of television and the stated objectives of MKBKSH tempted Feroz, also a playwright and screenwriter, to move to the small screen. “I have moved to a bigger idea as I believe that TV should be used for entertaining and social engagement – as that was the very purpose of spreading the network,” says the director. The challenge was to engage “the captive audience of television and portray the truth while telling a good story, which is akin to moving in uncharted territory expecting surprises but also growth of self,” he adds.

The bi-weekly episodes of 30-minutes each to be telecast on................

Radio lovers in the nooks and corners of Dakshina Kannada and neighboring districts will no more encounter hisses and buzzes in Akashvani, Mangalore programmes, on Medium Wave. What happens when the media is used to massage the darbari’s ego?

When Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar decided to shut off the television cameras and stop the telecast of the proceedings in her chamber of Parliament, she took the first step back from the media strategy that Indira Gandhi first unveiled nearly four decades ago. Indira Gandhi wanted to establish a direct connect between the Delhi darbar and every village across the length and breadth of India through satellite television. The Sam Pitroda committee report offers a starting point.

India is in dire need of broadcast autonomy, especially in the form of a truly autonomous, even if state-assisted, public service broadcaster. This was a promise made by Nehru to Parliament in 1948. But  it is yet to be redeemed. The post-Emergency 1977-78 broadcast autonomy committee, in its report “Akash Bharati”, presented a blueprint for autonomy. That was dumbed down by the Janata government and a Prasar Bharati bill was finally enacted in 1990, brought into force in 1997 and emasculated almost ab initio.

What the government wanted, with cross-party political support, was some kind of......................

NEW DELHI: Even as it considers putting the popular Vividh Bharati channel of All India Radio on FM Mode, Prasar Bharati is to make an in-depth review of the medium wave radio channels since it feels that a majority of listeners are presently hooked to FM.

The Prasar Bharati Board accepted a proposal by Chief Executive Officer Jawhar Sircar in its meeting yesterday evening that medium wave was a thing of the past since the present generation depended on car radios or mobiles for audio waves, which are mostly available in FM mode.

He said he proposed to the Board that medium wave channels could be run simultaneously on FM till a complete transition is completed.

Sircar told Radioandmusic.com that he had requested the Board that there should be a ‘freeze’ on the new DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) since it is linked to medium wave.

He said that he felt the FM should be strengthened, and that Doordarshan transmitter towers all over the country could be adequately used for this. In fact, he said this was already done in many of the towers.

He has also suggested launching the Vividh Bharati service – presently only available in Delhi – in all the other three metros and putting the channel on FM. (It may be recalled that a proposal to this effect was made by AIR when FM was launched but was never implemented.)

All India Radio sources told Radioandmusic.com that substantial sums had already been spent on research and on DRM, which has failed to take off so far as the DRM sets are not easily affordable. Sources said this was an issue linked with supply and demand. In fact, the Sam Pitroda Committee had also recently given its view for strengthening DRM, these sources said.

In fact, it was claimed that AIR was ahead of many countries in the work it had done on DRM, and it had already floated a tender for purchasing new equipment for DRM. Furthermore, the Planning Commission has already sanctioned huge sums of money for promoting DRM in the country, the sources said.

The Board is also in favour of monetising the excess land available around fifty radio transmitters all over the country that are not being adequately used to generate revenues for Prasar Bharati. (It is understood that the Government had earlier opposed this on the ground that this was public property and also for security reasons.) Prasar Bharati feels this land can be given out to public sector companies or banks as this will not compromise the security aspects.
Speaking at a World Radio Day function organised by the News Services Division of AIR, Sircar had said yesterday that even the Parliamentary Standing Committee had favoured monetisation of this land.

Sircar also says that stopping transmission of short wave transmissions – since listenership was poor for these channels – would result in a saving of Rs 100 to 110 crore.

However, Government sources told radioandmusic.com that this was not possible since short wave was aimed at reaching out to foreign listeners or Indians overseas, while admitting that the issue could be studied to shut down transmission wherever listenership was poor.

Public Broadcaster Prasar Bharati is planning of converting five of its regional Doordarshan channels into round-the-clock cable and satellite channels.
In a meeting of Prasar Bharati board held today, a proposal to turn Doordarshan channels for Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Jammu region was discussed, sources told PTI.
Prasar Bharati CEO Jawahar Sircar said the proposal was discussed in the board meeting and added that a optimisation committee would study the various aspects related to carrying out of this transition.
"The board has given in-principle approval to the scaling up these channels," an official said.
These channels had been broadcasting terrestrially for four hours but according to the proposal discussed in the Prasar Bharati board meeting, turning them into the round-the- clock channels would not require much of additional resources.
Earlier Prasar Bharati had turned four Doordarshan channels from part-time to round-the-clock channels in the Hindi heartland states of Bihar, UP, MP and Rajasthan.
Officials said an idea considered at the meeting was putting the historical speeches of national leaders in Prasar Bharati's archives on the internet, which found support from members of the board.
