Viewers are running to DD from noise on private news channels: A. Surya Prakash

The Prasar Bharati chairman on autonomy for Doordarshan and turning DD News into a top-class news channel 

New Delhi: A. Surya Prakash, consulting editor at the English daily Pioneer and a fellow at the Vivekananda International Foundation, was appointed the chairman of Prasar Bharati earlier this week. In an interview at the Prasar Bharati office in New Delhi, he spoke of autonomy for Doordarshan and turning DD News into a top-class news channel. Edited excerpts: What is your agenda as chairman of Prasar Bharati, considering Doordarshan seems to be under government control? Since the idea is to have an autonomous corporation, I think everyone should strive towards that whether one is in the government or in Prasar Bharati. As far as my agenda is concerned, whether it's digitization or other new technologies that we need to adopt, we have to get the volumes and look at their commercial viability. These are ideas that we need to pursue. Would you push for autonomy of Prasar Bharati during your term? I was looking at the budget of Prasar Bharati. The budgetary support was Rs.1,400 crore about four-five years ago. In the current financial year, it is Rs.1,950 crore. Out of a budget of approximately Rs.4,000 crore, 50% is coming from the Union of India. I don't think this is a good idea. We need to look at that. These are my preliminary views on the matter. I need to sit with colleagues and ideate on some of these things. I'm very troubled that public money of Rs.2,000 crore is going to Prasar Bharati on an annual basis. Do we really need that kind of budgetary support from the government? The corporation must, therefore, look at its assets. We must objectively bring about an improvement in the commercial viability of the organization. There needs to be a 10-year plan where Prasar Bharati can stand on its own feet. We need to look at some recommendations made by the Sam Pitroda committee or anything that is good and will take us towards strengthening Prasar Bharati as an autonomous institution.

AIR pays tributes to Ghazal legend Begum Akhtar

Lucknow: All India Radio, Lucknow, on Thursday paid glowing tributes to the golden voice of Indian ghazal music, the late Begum Akhtar on the occasion of her death anniversary.

The event titled "Yaadon Ke Aainey Mein" (In the Mirror of Memories) witnessed noted musician Gulshan Bharati and Dr Seema Bharadwaj rendering ghazals, thumris and dadra sung by the late singing legend.

The haunting ghazals "Mere Hamnafas Mere Hamnawan, mujhe dost banke dagaa na dey" and "Koi Keh De Gulshan Gulshan" were  rendered by Dr Seema Bharadwaj.
Singer Gulshan Bharti rendered Bhairvi Thumri "O Nirmohi Sapne Ma Aaja Kachu To Bipatiya Kam Hui Javey" and dadra "Piya Jao, Jao, Mosey Na Bolo Sauten Ke Sang Raho" sung by Begum Akhtar in her lifetime.

Sardar Patel, Indira Gandhi to be remembered by AIR, DD on their anniversaries

NEW DELHI: Both All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan are celebrating India's Iron Man Sardar Vallabhai Patel's birthday this week with different programmes.
 
As in previous years, AIR had organised a discussion on 29 October, which will be broadcast on 30 October.  This year's topic is Marxism, Socialism and Integral Humanism. The speaker is veteran mediaperson and member of Parliament Chandan Mitra.
 
Meanwhile, AIR Delhi will also broadcast live the function relating to the 30th Death Anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from 1 Akbar Road, New Delhi on 30 October from 8.15 am onwards on Indraprastha Channel MW 366.3 mtr and a Radio Report  on the various functions  held  in the capital to commemorate the anniversary and will be broadcast on 30 October 2014 at. 8.30 pm. This report will be broadcast from Indraprastha Channel 366.3 mtr and National Network.

DD, AIR programmes to mark Sardar Patel's birth anniversary

Doordarshan and All India Radio have firmed up programmes to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel on October 31. 

Prasar Bharati officials said DD Bharati, which is considered the cultural channel of Doordarshan, is going to telecast a programme 'Sardar Patel'': Vallabh Bhai Patel Birthday Celebration on 31 Oct 2014 at 6 pm while DD National will telecast Hindi film 'Sardar' directed by Ketan Mehta.

I&B minister assures FM auctions by February

NEW DELHI: Auction for FM radio phase III will be completed by February 2015, a month before the current licences lapse, information and broadcasting (I&B) minister Prakash Javadekar assured on Wednesday. This comes amidst widespread concerns about the impending expiry of licences. 

"We held a meeting recently and I assure you that auctions will happen well before licences (of existing radio operators) lapse in March...one month before at least," Javadekar said in response to a question.

While, the representative from South Korean broadcaster KBS was chosen president.

NEW DELHI: Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar was elected vice-president of Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) in Macau on Tuesday. 

Apart from Sircar, representatives from Malaysian broadcaster RTM and Japan's NHK were also chosen as vice-presidents while the representative from South Korean broadcaster KBS was chosen president. Prasar Bharati officials said Sircar was elected unopposed.

Broadcaster operated by Prasar Bharti appoints three officials to its ad sales team 

New Delhi: State broadcaster Doordarshan (DD) has revamped its advertising sales team as it seeks to increase its ad revenue by 15-20% this year, two of its officials said. The broadcaster operated by Prasar Bharti has appointed three officials to its ad sales team— Tauquir Zaidi, national sales head; Aum Tiwari, regional sales head (west); and Gunjan Varshney, regional sales head (north)—over the past one month. "We have set up a new sales team and plan to get into aggressive marketing. We will approach new clients including PSUs (public sector units) that don't advertise on our platforms apart from tapping into newer markets," said a DD official who declined to be named. DD garnered a total advertising revenue of Rs.1,293 crore during FY2014.

Falling prey to sensationalism is the biggest weakness of media, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said Tuesday.

"Media's biggest strength is that it can shape public opinion and biggest weakness is that it falls prey to sensationalism," Javadekar said Tuesday.
In a recorded message for the inaugural session of the 8th South Asia Dialogue on 'The Role of Media in Promoting Regional Understanding in South Asia', the minister said media should "work in a mission mode to bring about a positive change in the society".

MUMBAI: It was in September that Star India's Uday Shankar was once again handed over the reins of Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF), and since then, he has been working on a three-point agenda.
 
Says the man who has been very vocal about his views on digitisation in India, "When you are heading an organisation like IBF, there are three things that we all need to look at. First and foremost is digitisation. It is the most fundamental thing that the industry requires and so we need to ensure that we engage with government and put the digitisation road map back on track."

Chennai : Union information and broadcasting ministry has asked All India Radio (AIR) officials to stop the four hours of Hindi commercial programme in the regional stations, the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit said Monday.

In a statement issued here, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the ministry ordered AIR officials to stop such programmes on a request from Tamil Nadu BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan.

AIR will not extend Hindi broadcast in TN

CHENNAI : The national Vividh Bharati programme in Hindi which was proposed to be broadcast for four hours from 12 noon to 4 pm through local AIR stations in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has been withdrawn following a representation made to the Union minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar, informed sources said. 

Sources in the AIR said the commercial broadcast which was currently restricted till 12 noon was proposed to be extended by four hours.

As an ardent listener of radio, one would often be tempted to ask luminaries in media about its relevance in an era of cable channels and social networking sites. I got my answers in times of the flood. The times when the low tension wires, telephone and TV cables were used to ferry people across from one place to another laid bare what radio can do.

When all of us were all at sea seeing how deadly those beautiful life giving waters of the Jhelum had turned into, when TV sets were rammed up in the upper storeys along with other household belongings and laptops had to bear an indefinite blackout for the want of electricity and facebook forgot most Kashmiri faces for weeks, it was Radio which was connecting all of us. Director Radio Kashmir Srinagar, Rukhsana Jabeen, Director CBS Shamshad Kralwari along with the battery of stalwarts in broadcasting like Syed Humayun Kaisar and Talha Jehangir deserve all the accolades that have come their way post floods.

AIR's photo gallery makes waves & receives overwhelming response from school and college students

HUBLI: BD Nemagouda struggled to get his students to connect with the works of Kannada poets Kuvempu and Bendre. The teacher of a government primary school in Chimmad village in Bagalkot district then hit upon the idea of taking them on a journey through the lives of the litterateurs. Mere anecdotes, he knew, wouldn't suffice; the students needed to have glimpses of chapters of their lives. Nemagouda did the next best thing to turning back the clock. He took them to All India Radio's (AIR) unit in Dharwad, which boasts of a permanent gallery - Banuliya Chitrabhitti - of nearly 100 black and white, and 12 colour rare photographs of eminent personalities from the fields of literature, music and art who visited or performed there over the last 60 years.

New Delhi, Oct. 23: Narendra Modi's first "talk from the heart" became a talking point. He is now set to take the mike for his second.

The next Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister's interactive radio session, will be aired on Sunday, November 2.

Like the previous one on October 3 coinciding with Vijaya Dashami, Modi has invited people to share their thoughts, comments and examples of good governance in the upcoming show on the All India Radio (AIR).

AIR news SMS service adds four languages

The News Service Division of India's public broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) has launched free SMS news headlines in four more Indian languages.

The service is now also being offered in Gujarati, Assamese, Tamil and Malayalam on pilot basis.

The Free AIR News SMS service was launched in English last year and has 400,000 subscribers.

All India Radio stops airing Ignou's Gyanvani

All India Radio (AIR) has stopped airing 37 educational channels of Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou) after, literally, begging for more than a year for payment of about Rs 21.64 crore which was due since April 1 last year.

The Gyanvani, a network of the Ignou's FM educational radio stations which were taken off the air by the public broadcaster from October 1, was serving over 30 lakh students of the open varsity across the country.

Hundreds of students, who depended on these radio stations for their studies, have been affected. Before taking Gyanvani off the air, the public broadcaster gave enough opportunity to the Ignou to clear its dues.

Age not a criterion for AIR announcers/radio jockeys who undergo voice modulation tests

NEW DELHI: All India Radio will not consider the age of its radio jockeys when conducting skill and voice modulation tests.

Noting that 'monotony is venom for any broadcaster', AIR Director General F Sheheryar told Radioandmusic.com that a broadcaster needs to recreate itself to remain popular.

While stressing that none of the radio jockeys were permanent employees and were on contract for presenting programmes for a maximum of six days a month, Sheheryar said that some of the presenters had gone to court in Kolkata but had lost the case.

मल्‍टीमीडिया टीम। लोकसभा चुनाव जीतकर सत्‍ता संभालने के बाद प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने मीडिया से लगातार दूरी बनाकर रखी है। उनकी यह दूरी दूरदर्शन और आकाशवाणी पर लागू नहीं होती है।

मौजूदा केंद्र सरकार निजी समाचार माध्‍यमों के बजाय सरकारी पर ज्‍यादा भरोसा कर रहा है। इसकी सबसे बड़ी वजह यह है कि प्रसार भारती के मातहत आने वाले इन दोनों माध्‍यमों के प्रतिनिधि सरकार से कोई भी ऐसा प्रश्‍न नहीं पूछते हैं, जिससे किसी भी प्रकार की फजीहत हो।

यही वजह है कि सरकारी रेडियो और टीवी चैनल की पूछ-परख बढ़ गई है। आलोचकों का मानना है कि विपक्षियों को कमजोर करना, मंत्रियों पर नजर रखना तथा पीएमओ में समस्‍त शक्तियों को निहित रखना ही नरेंद्र मोदी के कामकाज का तरीका है।

AIR’s Kochi FM: Jubilee Celebration’s on

KOCHI: All India Radio's Kochi FM station, which is Kerala's first FM station, will be celebrating its silver jubilee on November 1. As a part of the celebrations it will be organising a slew of programmes which will last till December 31. Kochi FM is looking to reinvent itself due to competition from private players.

Kochi FM, which began transmitting in 1989, enjoyed monopoly status till 2007, when private radio stations started operations. "The entry of private players have actually helped us as they created more awareness about radio," said Balakrishnan Koyyal, station director at Kochi FM station.

DD's review committee to bring changes in programming, compete with private channels

NEW DELHI: A mobile application is to be introduced to ensure that people get Doordarshan news on the move, just as they are getting All India Radio news headlines via SMS.
 
This was decided by a Doordarshan High-level Review Committee in its meeting in Delhi. The meeting was held after the Committee was reconstituted. The new members are DD director-general Vijaya Laxmi Chhabra, DG (News) Archana Datta and additional directors-general Amit Shukla, Ranjan Mishra, Manoj Pandey, Mayank Aggarwal and S Mathias.

Jawhar Sircar: The common man’s classic choice

For BV Keskar, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's Information Minister from 1952 to 1962, Hindi film songs were a strict no-no where Akashvani was concerned. In his opinion, the mission of the public broadcaster was to encourage only classical music. 

Keskar had to face a lot of pressure and ridicule for this rather obdurate stand, but there is no doubt that had it not been for him, Indian classical music — which by nature was meant primarily for the elite — may have never reached and enthralled the common man.

Free AIR SMS News now in ten languages including English

NEW DELHI: The News Service Division of All India Radio has increased the number of languages in which free SMS news headlines are available to a total of ten.

Last month, the free SMS service, which was launched in English by AIR in September last year, increased to include five Indian languages: Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit, Dogri and Nepali. The news will be sent by AIR News Services Division.

New-look DD News channel focusing on 'balanced coverage': DG

Viewers who followed the coverage of Assembly poll results today on Doordarshan News got a feel of the new-look channel with upgraded content and design -- a result of efforts by the public broadcaster to revamp itself in line with the contemporary trends. 

According to DD News Director General Archana Dutta, the channel is trying to provide richer content and better presentation along with "good" analysis.

AIR AM channel to go FM in metros

India's public broadcaster All India Radio's (AIR) AM service may soon be available on FM transmitters in the biggest four metros in the country, reports Radioandmusic.com.

Vividh Bharti – the commercial channel of AIR is already available on FM in the rest of the country.

AIR Director General F Sheyeryar told the publication that medium wave broadcasts had not been possible in the metros until now because of highrise buildings.

All India Radio – Tirupati will be conducting 'Akashvani Sangeeth Sammelan – 2014' on October 18 at the local Mahathi Auditorium from 6 p.m. The local radio station of Prasar Bharati (India's public service broadcaster) at Tirupati, has been selected among several others stations for conducting the prestigious event, this year.

Two programmes, one musical and one vocal, will be held at the venue in which denizens of the temple city can participate. The musical programme would be led by Inupakurthi Manmadha Rao (saxophone) accompanied by M. Suryadeepthi (violin), D. Dharma Rao (mridandam) and K. Shyam Kumar (kanjira). The vocal programme would be delivered by S.V.N. Chandanabala (Karnatic vocal) accompanied by V. Nalina Mohan (violin), Adamya Ramanand (mridangam) and M.R. Manjunath (ghatam).

इसी कड़ी में आकाशवाणी शिमला शनिवार को शिमला के गेयटी थियेटर में इस सभा का आयोजन करने जा रहा है। इस संगीत सभा का मुख्य आकर्षण कर्नाटक के शास्त्रीय गायक सोमनाथ मरदुर की मधुर आवाज होगी। सोमनाथ मरदुर ने प्रमुख संगीतज्ञ पंडित बसवराज राजगुरु और पंडित मल्लिकार्जुन मंसूर के संरक्षण में रहकर निपुणता प्राप्त की।

DD Bharti pays tribute to Indian music and big names in the field

NEW DELHI: The cultural channel of Doordarshan, DD Bharati, is doing a series of shows that are aimed at understanding the nuances of Indian music and paying tributes to the big names in this field.

A specially selected series entitled, "Remembering Legends- Vibhutiyon ko pranaam" will be aired this weekend. The show will offer some nifty archival performances of the Hindustani Classical Music Aces likely the legendary Dagar Brothers, Rampur Seheswan Gharana and Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. All the episodes have exclusively been curated and re-presented by Yatindra Mishra and Smt. Kumud Diwan. The telecast will be on 17 October and 18 October 2014, 9 pm onwards and repeat telecast at 5am and 1pm.

LCO forums appeal to Minister Javedekar for their inclusion in new task force

KOLKATA: The local cable operators (LCOs) have once again appealed to the Minister for Information & Broadcasting Prakash Javedekar that the last mile owners (LMOs) associations/federations from all the four corners of the country must be a part of the new task force.
 
The task force was set up for the implementation of digitisation in the country and particularly to oversee the execution of the last two phases of digital addressable system (DAS).
 
It should be noted that on 8 October, when all the stakeholders met, the LCOs expressed their view of not being given a voice in the task force.

- दूरदर्शन भोपाल के 23वें स्थापना दिवस समारोह में हुई सांस्कृतिक प्रस्तुतियां

भोपाल। तबले की थाप संग दर्जनों घुंघरूओं की झंकार मंगलवार को संगीत प्रेमियों को सुर सरिता से सराबोर कर दिया। नजारा था, दूरदर्शन केन्द्र का। दूरदर्शन भोपाल के 23वें स्थापना दिवस समारोह का आयोजन किया गया। जिसमें कलाकारों ने एक से बढ़कर एक प्रस्तुतियों से कलारसिकों का दिल जीत लिया। समारोह में बनारस घराने के कलाकारों ने कथक नृत्य, राजस्थान के ख्यात कलाकार अप्पानाथ समूह के कलाकारों ने राजस्थानी नृत्य, प्रेम नारायण एंड ग्रुप ने सेक्सोफोन और बुराहनपुर के कव्वालों ने ठेलिया कव्वाली की आकर्षक प्रस्तुति दी। इस मौके पर कलाकारों ने विभिन्न विधाओं का बेजोड़ संगम पेश किया।

डगर बीच कैसे चलूं...

समारोह की शुरुआत बनारस घराने के युगल कथक कलाकार पं. माता प्रसाद मिश्र और पंडित रविशंकर मिश्र के पारंपरिक नृत्य से हुई। जहां उन्होंने राग बैरागी में शिव वंदना पेश की। इस जोड़ी ने भगवान शिव के विभिन्ना रूप और सौंदर्य का चित्रण बंदिश में पेश किया। इसके बाद, कलाकारों ने तीन ताल में परंपरागत तोड़ा, उठान, चक्रधर, ताल, उपज की शानदार प्रस्तुति देकर संगीत प्रेमियों को खासा रोमांचित किया। नृत्य के इसी क्रम में उन्होंने राग चारुकेसी में कृष्णलीला को दिखाया। वहीं, राग मिश्र ख्माज में दादरा गीत 'डगर बीच कैसे चलूं...' की प्रस्तुति दी। प्रस्तुति में तबले पर प्रीतम कुमार मिश्र, हारमोनियम पर आनंद किशोर मिश्र और सितार पर अमन तेलंग ने संगत दी।

Doordarshan to resume partial operations in Kashmir valley

Srinagar: Doordarshan Kendra Srinagar, which was marooned for three weeks due to floods last month, will resume partial operations from its station here on Wednesday, an official said.

"We shall resume four-hour transmission from tomorrow as restoration works in key equipment has been carried out," Director Doordarshan Kendra Srinagar Shabir Mujahid said on Tuesday..

PM Narendra Modi's 'man ki baat' was heard by 66 per cent of listeners in 6 cities

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "man ki baat" address to the nation on October 3 on All India Radio (AIR) was listened by over 66 per cent of the people in six cities of the country. 

The survey was conducted randomly in Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmadabad, Bangalore, Bhopal and Trivandrum covering 100 listeners in each of these cities, said Director General of AIR F Sheharyar.

9 TV shows of DD that will make 90s kids nostalgic !

With too many TV shows conquering audiences' attention, few still have some sweet memories of those old Doordarshan days
While cable network was yet to cement their foothold across the Indian TV industry, viewers were in full joy watching classics on DD.
And as we did not have the luxury of switching to multiple channels, we could watch only what DD had in store for us; shows that might have been low on budget but high on content.
One just can't sit and recall these show without a soothing smile running down their faces, take a look:

1)Dekh Bhai Dekh

In this great sitcom  Shekhar Suman was  in his elements, It was one of the most followed comic caper in those old days.
This was one of the foremost sitcoms on Indian Television, which was quite a rage in the country.

This story covers three generations of a family, who despite having differences love and stood by each other. The whole cast was astounding, but Shekhar Suman's character was a real show stealer.

2) ChandraKanta


We were acquainted with the world of magic and wizardry much before the world have seen Harry porter and Narnia. Every Sunday, we were glued to our television set to enjoy this TV series.


Inspired by the novel of the same name, written by Devikanandan Khatri. Actors like Irffan, Akhilendra  Mishra, Mukesh Khanna raised the bar even higher and the magic and wizardry further added the much needed flavour to the content.

 

3) Alif Laila


Alif Laila was a viewer's delight. Though it may look more as a spoof to the new generation due to its age old costume design but we were more interested in content.

Based on the stories of 'One thousand and one night', this TV series covered a slew of fables from Aladdin to Ali Baba to Sindabad-The Sailor, viewers were left craving for more with each passing episode.
