Information and Broadcasting to assess success of community radio stations

Jul 14, 2014 - Nitin Mahajan | New Delhi

With a provision of Rs 100 crore being made by the government for promotion of community radio stations in the country, the information and broadcasting ministry has decided to conduct a nation-wide survey to assess the success and reach of existing stations and on the need for more.

Sources said that the survey is likely to be completed in four months. The government has decided to rope an independent consulting agency to conduct the survey for the ministry.

Currently there are about 170 community radio stations working in various parts of the country. While about 250 odd are in various stages of the licensing process to set up new stations. The Narendra Modi government is understood to be focusing on the development and growth of community radios as these stations are felt to be closer to common man and take up issues that are generally neglected by the mainstream media.
