All India Radio's revenue earnings grow compared to last year

MUMBAI: The public broadcaster of India, All India Radio (AIR) has witnessed a growth of Rs 134.27 crore in the financial year 2013-14. AIR's gross revenue earnings from all sources including commercials during the year 2012-13 was Rs 376.68 crore and was Rs 510.95 crore in year 2013-14.

The details were presented by the AIR team during their meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi before the budget session.

According to AIR, the network witnessed phenomenal growth in the last two decades. Presently, broadcasting reaches out to 99.20 per cent of the population spread over about 92 per cent of the area through 413 broadcasting centres and 461 transmitters. It is estimated that there are 600 millions radio sets in India, out of which 460 millions are FM sets and AIR reaches 460 million listeners on any specific day through these sets. AIR has a three tier broadcasting system-national, regional and local. Thus broadcasting happens in 23 languages and 146 dialects.
41.48 per cent of AIR programmes are music based. AIR covers not only popular music but also local and regional music like classical, folk and tribal.

AIR has a total of 584 transmitters out of which 145 is MW, 48 SW and 391 FM. The FM signal covers 44 per cent of the total population and MW covers 98 per cent of the total population.

It is also present on DTH platforms with 21 AIR channels. The presentation also states that it has proposed 19 new channels as well.

By 2017, AIR is planning to reach its digitalisation target. AIR plans to expand the FM coverage in rural, remote and border areas and also other uncovered areas. It aims to modernise and make the existing Regional News Units automatic. AIR also plans to set up Regional Archival Centres in five zones. Apart from digitaisation, the network plans to expand on web with internet Radio, webcasting and podcasting which would fortify its hold amongst Indian population in India and Indian Diaspora around the world.
