NEW DELHI: The cabinet made it mandatory today for television rating agencies to have multiple owners to prevent any conflict of interest, saying that no company will be allowed to hold more than 10% in a TV ratings agency as well as in a media company.
TV rating agencies measure the total viewership of a channel or television programme and impact business decisions of advertisers and broadcasters.
The government also directed rating agencies to scale up to a minimum panel size of 20,000 homes within six months of the guidelines coming into force and there thereafter increase the panel size by 10,000 every year till it reaches 50,000 homes. Of the total panel homes, 25% will be rotated every year.
"Present TV rating system used a sample size of around 10,000 which is not adequate to represent the population of 15.4 crore TV households in India. It also does not.................
