Chennai: It is not every day that a newscaster gets to announce a historical event. But it was the turn of R.S. Venkatraman to announce the news that India had attained Independence from the British in All India Radio's southeast Asian external service news in the early hours of August 15, 1947 and it was an unforgettable day for him.
Recognising the services rendered by such AIR Tamil newscasters — Venkatraman, Rajaraman and Saroj Narayanaswami - AIR will be honouring them with awards as part of its 75th anniversary celebrations on Tuesday.
