Race 2 unsuitable for Doordarshan

According to CBFC the film is unsuitable for the channel's audience even after cuts. Since its release in 2013, Race 2 has been seen on the small screen multiple times. But the film starring Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, Anil Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez, has been deemed too racy for the national broadcaster. 

The Central Board of Film Certification(CBFC) has decided that the thriller is not appropriate for screening on Doordarshan. The board is of the opinion that the film is unsuitable for the channel's audience even after cuts because its very theme is too risque.

Government departments owe around Rs 80 crore to Doordarshan for advertisements

NEW DELHI: Public broadcaster Doordarshan has reported a revenue of Rs 1295.86 crore in 2013-14 from advertisements. Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar has said that the revenue in the current year till 31 May was Rs 87.76 crore.
 
He told Parliament today that the advertisement revenue in 2012-13 was Rs 1298.16 crore, as against Rs 1100.27 crore in 2011-12.

Prasar Bharti facing shortage of manpower

NEW DELHI: Public Broadcaster Prasar Bharati is facing shortage of manpower in various departments including its Programme Wing and the News Services Division, Lok Sabha was informed today. 

Information and Broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha that the vacancies had arisen due to retirement, resignation and death of employees.

Over Rs 390 crore set aside for digitisation of All India Radio in 12th Plan

NEW DELHI: A sum of Rs 393 crore has been set aside under the 12th Plan for improving the set-up of All India Radio and expansion of FM services in the country.

The Parliament was informed by Information and Broadcasting Minister, Prakash Javadekar that around sixty per cent of AIR studios had been digitised during the 10th Plan. Schemes have been sanctioned for the digitisation of AIR set-ups to improve the quality of AIR programmes and expansion of FM Services in the country during the 11th Plan.

केंद्र और राज्य सरकारों के विभिन्न विभागों पर प्रसार भारती का करोड़ों रुपये बकाया है। सूचना और प्रसारण मंत्री प्रकाश जावडेकर ने लोकसभा में सदस्यों के सवालों के लिखित उत्तर में यह जानकारी देते हुए बताया कि विभिन्न केंद्रीय और राज्य सरकार के विभागों पर कुल 79 करोड़, 66 लाख, 30 हजार, सात सौ 52 रुपये की राशि बकाया है।

Old set-top box, but new DTH operator

Consumers dissatisfied with the services of their direct-to-home (DTH) operator may soon be able to shift to another one without having to change the set-top box.

The Centre has asked the-Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to explore how set-top box (STB) inter-operability can be effectively made possible.

Technical inter-operability will give the customer flexibility to change the service provider without having to change the customer premises equipment. It will only require changing a smart card, as in mobile communications.

MUMBAI: While Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister Prakash Javadekar has been stressing his agenda of making public broadcasters Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR) the preferred choice for masses, the government on the other hand has started evaluating the relevance of Prasar Bharati. Prasar Bharati has become a black hole in terms of investments made by the government. Doordarshan, in particular, has been unable to compete with the private satellite broadcasters in terms of audiences and revenues. The BJP-led government is evaluating if it is necessary to continue with the statutory body as it has become a 'white elephant' of sorts over the years, according to a report in The Indian Express.

A reinvention of sound could be on the horizon for private FM

MUMBAI: With radio operators being given permission to carry news bulletins from All India Radio, everyone has been left wondering if news on private FM will now sound like AIR or like the dramatic TV news sagas. Then again, radio stations could also create their very own style, if allowed. Only time will tell what is in store, but until then radio networks are chalking down ways to implement news in a more effective way.

The change in power from UPA to a BJP-led government, and the appointment of MIB minister Prakash Javadekar, confirmed Private FM stations will be allowed to air news from sources like AIR and PTI. The Union Minister also added that FM RJs will be allowed to read news; a statement that was followed by mixed views.

MIB orders 24-hr blackout of DY 365 & News Time channels

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has ordered blackout of two North-East based channels – DY 365 and News Time – for 24 hours for violating certain provisions of the Programme Code prescribed under Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 and the rules framed thereunder.

The blackout period will commence from midnight of July 30, 2014 and end at midnight of July 31, 2014.

The news story in question concerned two girls and an MLA and was aired on DY 365 on October 30, 2013 at 18:52:25 hrs and 21:08:41 hrs and on News Time on October 30, 2013 at 18:53:51 hrs and on October 31 at 21:38:33 hrs.

The report mentioned about two girls, who were travelling in the red beaconed official vehicle of Abu Taher Bepari, Parliamentary Secretary and MLA of Golakganj, Assam.

DD reinvents; but can it lock horns with contemporary private channels?

With Finance Minister Arun Jaitley recently stating during the Budget session that Doordarshan (DD National) will compete on par with other TV channels, the channel has recently launched a barrage of new shows and repackaged old ones. Shows such as 'Ek Tha Rusty' season 3, Ghan Garaje, The exalted portals of Thumri, Nadiyaan Gaati Hain and few others like these have been introduced one after the other within the last two months. This begs the question if DD National is ready to set aside its age-old ways and become a television channel to really compete with other contemporary private channels?According to a source from the national channel, "Though the channel will not be able to compete with the likes of Hindi GECs such as Star Plus, Zee TV, etc., as our audience primarily lies in small towns and villages, we are however now trying to capture viewers from the urban audience". Further to this, the source said that though the network is autonomous they cannot deny the influence of the Finance Minister's speech and the Information and Broadcast Ministry on the channel and the push for it become more competitive.

However, if one were to take a look at some of their recent programs, many of them are just a re-introduction of old shows which have done well in the past. 'Ek Tha Rusty' for instance was once upon a time a top rated show on television at a time when competition was too little. Though they might expect to tap into the nostalgia of the viewers with the new season 3 it seems almost like an insurmountable task with the choice audiences have today. The other shows launched recently combine a mix of infotainment and music shows such as Nadiyaan Gaati Hain, Earth Matters, Gaon Connection, Yatra, Taaki Bahti Rahe Ganga and Ghan Garaje and appeal to a very niche audience. The only show that has done quite well is the reality dance show 'Bharat Ki Shaan: Let's Dance', which has performed well on the channel for five seasons. This year however it has been revamped with a new look and has managed to rope in Close-Up as the title sponsor for the show. Among the new programs introduced lately is the soap 'Aisa Prem Kahan' which they hope will get them more eyeballs.

I&B Ministry Cancels Licence Of 4 Cable Networks

Digicable, promoted by Jagjit Singh Kohli, is an old player who began his innings in Mumbai nearly two decades ago, and has set up competitive cable networks in Punjab, UP and now Kolkata. The Kolkata company's licence was cancelled following denial of security clearance by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

Doordarshan to explore ‘Dastan-E-Urdu’ - the story of a culture and language

NEW DELHI:  A new series on the story of Urdu as representing the evolution of India's secular, syncretic identity is to be telecast on Doordarshan's national channel every Sunday from this week.

The 13-episode docudrama Dasten-e-Urdu series with music by the renowned singer Shubha Mudgal has been directed by Aparna Srivastava Reddy and produced by eminent Urdu activist Kamna Prasad and will be telecast on Sundays at 9:30 pm.

According to the makers, languages reveal the history of a civilisation and the texture of a culture, then.

Crores spent, NDA govt takes re-look at Prasar Bharati’s ‘relevance’

Many in govt feel Prasar Bharati has become a 'white elephant' of sorts over the years.

THE NDA government has quietly started examining the "relevance" of public broadcaster Prasar Bharati and also whether it is necessary to continue with the statutory body which, many in the government feel, has become a "white elephant" of sorts over the years.

In a recent interaction with the Prime Minister's Office, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry is learnt to have conveyed that the government has spent close to
Rs 19,000 crore on Prasar Bharati ever since it came into existence in 1997 but the public broadcaster has clearly not been able to leverage the vast resources at its disposal to make Doordarshan and All India Radio the preferred choice of the masses.

The I&B Ministry has also conveyed to the PMO that a thorough review was in order before granting any more substantial funds to the broadcaster, sources told The Indian Express.

No decision yet on private FM channels airing news

Private FM radios will have permission to air news bulletin from the All India Radio (AIR) only, as the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry has not taken any decision yet on the proposal to increase the scope of news coverage by them.

In the third phase of FM network expansion, however, privately-owned radio stations will have permission to cover sports events, including covering them live. These stations can also air commentaries of sporting events organised in their locality, according to guidelines approved for the third phase of expansion of FM radio.

Govt committed to press freedom, says Javadekar

PUNE: Union minister for information and broadcasting Prakash Javadekar said the Modi government is committed to ensuring press freedom because the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party has experienced what censorship of the press was like during the Emergency,

Javadekar said he had been imprisoned for 16 months during the Emergency and could vividly recall the manner in which newspapers faced censorship from the government. "I can assure you that the Modi government will never do that," he said.

'Strengthening of DD coverage in border area ongoing process'

The government today termed strengthening of coverage of Doordarshan to counter anti-India propaganda along border areas as "ongoing process" and said the national broadcaster has given "priority" to its expansion through various plans. 

In a written reply to Rajya Sabha, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said that Prasar Bharti has approved a scheme in 11th Plan to further strengthen the television coverage in Jammu and Kashmir.

FM channels can carry All India Radio's news bulletins under Phase 3: Government

NEW DELHI: Government today said that under approved guidelines for FM Radio Phase III, permission- holders will be permitted to carry news bulletins of All India Radio in "exactly same format" on terms agreed with public broadcaster Prasar Bharti.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply that private FM channels have not been permitted to broadcast news under the existing FM Radio (Phase II) policy guidelines.

Vijaya Laxmi Chhabra named interim DG of Doordarshan

MUMBAI: Even before the current Doordarshan director general (DG) Tripurari Sharan's term comes to an end later this month, a new person who would later take charge has been found.
 
Vijaya  Laxmi Chhabra has been named as the interim DG of Doordarshan. She was the former ADG (programmes) in All India Radio and was set to retire in March. She will hold charge till the next DG is found.

Over 1400 designs received from general public for DAVP ads: Javadekar

NEW DELHI: Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar has said that the government has received 1470 designs from the general public for advertisements to be issued by the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP).
 
The Minister said in an informal chat that the response of the public came after the Ministry sought public participation on 15 July. Earlier, all the advertisements were designed by the DAVP.

AIR to bring Commonwealth Games Glasgow action live in India

All India Radio (AIR) will be broadcasting all the Commonwealth Games action live from July 24 to August 4, 2014. The Games are being held in Glasgow. Live coverage includes Curtain Raiser on July 23, Opening Ceremony on July 24, Closing Ceremony on August 4.

AIR will also broadcast live commentary of all the hockey matches (Men's and Women's) featuring India, including the semi-finals and final matches. India-specific Men's and Women's matches and final matches of the badminton events will also be covered live by AIR.

Plans to monetise AIR and DD archives, can be a way towards independent pubcaster

MUMBAI: In case there is doubt on how All India Radio (AIR) would survive if it becomes autonomous, then the reply to that would be their archives which include speeches and performances by many renowned personalities. A team from AIR are working on monetising the archives.

Archival Marketing Group is working closely with AIR employees to market Prasar Bharati's archival programmes. The three member group, set-up couple of years ago, includes- Chairman Subroto Chattopadhyay (former Saregama MD and chairman of The Peninsula Foundation), member Sudha Gopalakrishnan (executive director at Sahapedia and former mission director of the National Mission for Manuscripts); and member Vikram Sampath (founder Archive of Indian Music).

Chattopadhyay said, "We are working together on building further capacity and capability in AIR and DD. We are creating a process that will help the archive be marketed in the best possible way." Chattopadhyay incubates FMCG, entertainment and knowledge and insights businesses as well.

AIR houses music recordings which run into more than 17500 hours. It has 12000 tapes consisting of Hindustani, Carnatic and Folk music; and 190 Radio Autobiographies. It has approximately transferred 17500 Hours of content into digital Medium so far. There are about 10000 tapes yet to be transferred. AIR has managed to release CDs containing Hindustani vocal/ instrumental, Carnatic Vocal/ instrumental and Light/Devotional/Patriotic music.

Govt to Implement New Scheme to Archive Films: Javadekar

Government is in the process of implementation of a new scheme "National Film Heritage Mission" to restore, digitize and archive films and filmic materials, the Lok Sabha was told today.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said in a written reply that the Expenditure Finance Committeee (EFC) has recommended the implementation of the scheme for consideration of Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA).

He said government also proposes to declare the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, and Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata, to be the institutions of national importance through the proposed "The Natinal Institutes of Film, Television and Allied Studies Bill 2014.

"The Information and Broadcasting ministry is in the process of implementation of a new scheme "National Film Heritage Mission" to restore, digitize and archive films and filmic materials.

AIR launched new short wave service with Vividh Bharati and National Channel

All India Radio (AIR) has started a new Short Wave service with Vividh Bharati and National Channel combined on 9380 kHz coming from Aligarh towards Southern India. The new service was launched on July 21, 2014.

The schedule of the new service is 6.30 AM to 10.05 AM IST Vividh Bharati and 2.30 PM to 7.30 PM IST Vividh Bharati.

Gujjar body demands Gojri news on Doordarshan in J&K

An organisation of the Gujjar community in Jammu and Kashmir has asked the Indian government to start Gojri news on Doordarshan in the state and increase programmes in the language on AIR. 

The demand has been made by state president of Bhartiya Gujjar Mahasabha Eshfaq-ur-Rehman Poswal in a letter written to I&B Minister Parkash Javdekar today. 

"We demand the Government of India to start Gojri news on Doordarshan in J&K, besides increasing duration of Gojri programmes on AIR," Poswal has said in the letter.

By Amit Das, AIR (All India Radio) officially known as Akashvani has pioneered broadcasting right from the British days. The person responsible for the name of All India Radio is none other than Lionel Fieldon who was responsible for starting broadcasting in India.  AIR today is the division of Prasar Bharathi an autonomous corporation of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Government of India. The AIR used to be part of the government until recently when it was decided to give autonomy to free it from government control. 

The Doordarshan is the TV wing of Prasar Bharathi which was also owned by the Ministry but again to free it from government control, it was made autonomous. EARLY HISTORY   The history of news broadcasting in India is much older than that of All India Radio. The first ever news bulletin in the country went on the air from the Bombay Station on July 23, 1927 under a private company, the Indian  Broadcasting Company. A month later on August 26, 1927 another bulletin in Bengali was started from the Calcutta Station.  Until 1935, two bulletins, one each in English and Hindustani were broadcast from Bombay and a bulletin in Bengali was broadcast from Calcutta.  

The Indian Broadcasting Company went into liquidation in March, 1930 following which broadcasting came under the direct control of the Government of India.  The service was designated as the Indian State Broadcasting Service.  It was renamed All India Radio on June 8, 1936. DEVELOPMENT   The real breakthrough in news broadcasting came after January 1936 when the first news bulletin from the Delhi Station went on the air on January 19, 1936 coinciding with the starting of its transmission.  Besides, news bulletins in English and Hindustani, talks on current affairs were also started from the Station in both the languages. The Central News Organization was set up on August 1, 1937.

DD penny-wise, an event of national importance

New Delhi, July 23: The Commonwealth Games (CWG) that kicked off in Glasgow will be shown on DD News instead of the usual DD Sports because of a revenue-driven tussle with a private channel in which the public broadcaster had its way.

For viewers, it means the CWG telecasts till August 3 would be interspersed with news bulletins.

At the heart of the move is the row with Ten Sports, which holds the rights to the games but is required to share live feed of "events of national importance" — CWG is considered as such — with the government broadcaster under law.

Under the law, the Prasar Bharati Act, DD gets 25 per cent of the ad revenues and the "original content rights owner", Ten Sports in this case, 75 per cent.

Officials of Prasar Bharati, the public broadcaster that runs DD and All India Radio, have long complained that the current revenue-sharing system is loaded against them and want it changed to 50:50.

Usually, events like CWG are shown on DD National — a "terrestrial network", meaning it can be accessed without a cable connection and is therefore thought to have wider reach — or DD Sports, available only on cable and DTH.

However, internal estimates suggested that DD National would suffer a loss of Rs 2.5 crore every day, totalling Rs 27.5 crore in the 11 days of the games because regular programmes would have to be shuffled.

The anticipated losses would have occurred as the CWG telecasts would have drawn fewer ads than the more popular regular entertainment shows, officials said. Also, the private broadcaster would have got 75 per cent of the kitty.

DD News to broadcast opening and closing of Commonwealth Games as Ten Sports remains unrelenting

NEW DELHI: Doordarshan News will telecast live the opening of the Commonwealth Games from Glasgow.
 
The telecast of the Games being held from 24 July to 4 August will commence at 1.00 am India time.
 
Programmes (Live/Highlights) will also be telecast during the Games on DD News.  That apart, All India Radio will carry the live commentary of the opening and closing and events involving Indians.
 
Regular Highlight Capsules will be telecast daily by DD News. All events where Indians are taking part will be highlighted with live coverage.
 
I&B Ministry secretary Bimal Julka told indiantelevision.com that the Ministry wanted the telecasts on DD News.
 
It is learnt that DD Sports and Ten Sports failed to reach an agreement on the issue, and the Ministry issued a show cause notice to Ten Sports on Tuesday evening for declining to share the feed with DD Sports.

Commonwealth Games live on All India Radio

New Delhi, July 22 (ANI): All India Radio plans to bring programmes (Live/Highlights) on the Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow this year from July 24th to August 4th.

The live coverage will includes a curtain raiser on July 23, the opening ceremony on July 24 and the closing ceremony on August 4.

All India Radio will also broadcast live commentary of all hockey matches (Men's and Women's) featuring India, including the semi-finals and the final.

India-specific men's and women's matches and the finals of the badminton events will also be covered live by AIR.

Daily highlights capsules will be broadcast daily from July 24 to August 4, 2014 in the morning as well as in the evening.

This special coverage will come on AIR's National Channel, National Hook-up and FM Gold Network.

Govt wants Commonwealth Games to be broadcast on DD News

NEW DELHI: In a controversial decision, the information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry has recommended that news content on DD News be replaced with broadcast of Commonwealth Games for the next 11 days starting Thursday after Prasar Bharati and Ten Sports failed to reach an agreement. 

While the CWG telecast will be available to viewers, it will be at the expense of Doordarshan news. The news channel has a viewership of about 2.8 million people, according to Prasar Bharati. 

The I&B ministry issued a showcase notice to Ten Sports on Tuesday evening for declining to share the feed with DD Sports. Confirming the move, I&B secretary Bimal Julka said, "We have recommended to Prasar Bharati to show the games on DD News. The board was of the opinion that it would be a loss of revenue if sports is telecast on DD National." 

He added that the ministry had issued a notice to Ten Sports on the matter.

The live coverage will includes a curtain raiser on July 23, the opening ceremony on July 24 and the closing ceremony on August 4. NEW DELHI: The Government has emphasised that Prasar Bharati is 'not overshadowed by ideological apartheid or hate.'
 
Responding to a question, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said recently that Prasar Bharati carries out the public broadcasting services in a fair and objective manner and does not discriminate on the basis of ideologies.
 
He said in Parliament recently that Prasar Bharati has informed the Ministry that no journalist has been decommissioned or debarred by Doordarshan to curtail their independence.
 
Prasar Bharati has also said journalists are invited to various programmes according to the requirement of the subject, without any discrimination.
 
 The Minister made it clear that Prasar Bharati was a statutory autonomous body set up by an Act of Parliament - the Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Act 1990 - and "it is not a state run broadcasting network."

Govt wants Commonwealth Games to be broadcast on DD News

NEW DELHI: In a controversial decision, the information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry has recommended that news content on DD News be replaced with broadcast of Commonwealth Games for the next 11 days starting Thursday after Prasar Bharati and Ten Sports failed to reach an agreement.

While the CWG telecast will be available to viewers, it will be at the expense of Doordarshan news. The news channel has a viewership of about 2.8 million people, according to Prasar Bharati.

The I&B ministry issued a showcase notice to Ten Sports on Tuesday evening for declining to share the feed with DD Sports. Confirming the move, I&B secretary Bimal Julka said, "We have recommended to Prasar Bharati to show the games on DD News. The board was of the opinion that it would be a loss of revenue if sports is telecast on DD National."

All India Radio plans to bring programmes (Live/Highlights) on the Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow this year from July 24th to August 4th.

The live coverage will includes a curtain raiser on July 23, the opening ceremony on July 24 and the closing ceremony on August 4.

All India Radio will also broadcast live commentary of all hockey matches (Men's and Women's) featuring India, including the semi-finals and the final.

India-specific men's and women's matches and the finals of the badminton events will also be covered live by AIR.

Daily highlights capsules will be broadcast daily............

News-based progra-mmes such as Matamgi Wafam, Paogi Saktam and Jillagi Chithi produced by the RNU will also be available on this Facebook account, con-veyed a press release.

The early Eighties. It was the time of safari suits and Gold Spot, typewriters and turntables, when traffic jams were unheard of and children still played hopscotch in the colony park. But it was also a time of change.

The Maruti 800 car had been introduced in 1983, colour TV sets were selling like hot cakes, and discos had begun dotting the big cities. In 1982, Doordarshan, India's only television channel, had introduced the National Programme — a two-hour news-entertainment package for the entire nation, which covered 50 per cent of the population by 1984.

The stage was set for the country's first home-grown, long-running TV serial to make its appearance. Hum Log, which began on July 7, 1984 and ended after 156 episodes on December 17, 1985, was the pioneering ancestor of today's soaps.

A reality show based on classical music aired by Doordarshan will feature in the Limca Book of Records. 

"Our show 'Naad Bhed-The Mystery of Sound', the first ever reality show on classical music, has been selected by the Limca Book of Records, to be featured in its next edition under Television chapter: for being the First ever National- level Reality show on Classical Music," a statement issued by Doordarshan here said today.

New DD series to highlight contribution of Indian women scientists

NEW DELHI: Doordarshan is commencing a unique television series on trend-making women scientists which will commence from 20 July on DD Bharati.
 
To be telecast at 8.30 am every Saturday, 'Scientifically Yours' is a 13-episode series, which will have interactive discussion and series on a section of society that has not been sufficiently covered in the country.
 
The programme has been produced by Vigyan Prasar in collaboration with National Institute for Science communication and resources (NISCAIR).
 
 This is an effort to bring the living women legends in science on to the centre stage with their achievements and contributions and communicate to the youth of the country.
 
This may help in creating role models for students and researchers especially for girl students and motivate them in pursuing careers in science and technology.
 
Women scientists have been identified from various fields of research such as Physical Sciences, Biological sciences, Chemical sciences, Immunology, Agriculture etc.

PUNE: An ambitious project to switch Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR) broadcasts from medium wave frequency to 'FM' will soon be completed to enhance the audio quality, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said here today.

"Work is underway and will be completed soon," he said, talking to reporters here.

जागरण संवाददाता, बरेली : तकनीकी खराबी के चलते दूरदर्शन का प्रसारण हफ्ते भर से खराब चल रहा है। दस किलोवाट की क्षमता से चलते वाले ट्रांसमीटर को एक किलोवाट से चलाया जा रहा है।
दरअसल हफ्ते भर पहले दूरदर्शन में तकनीकी खराब आ गई थी। लोगों ने शिकायत की तो आनन फानन में एक किलोवाट के ट्रांसमीटर से चला दिया। इससे दूरदर्शन के कार्यक्रम स्पष्ट नहीं दिख रहे हैं।

DD Bharati explores music and monsoon with two new shows

NEW DELHI: Doordarshan is presenting its own ode to the monsoon – which is awaited by all to give a relief from the scorching heat – with two programmes which highlight the ragas and melodies based on classical music inspired by the rains.
 
DD Bharati will telecast Ghan Garaje featuring Pt. Kumar Gandharva and Shobha Gurtu, on 19 July at 09:00 pm. The show will also see a repeat on 20 July at 05:00 am and 01:00 pm. This will be followed by an archival presentation The exalted portals of Thumri on 20 July at 9.00 pm and the repeat telecast at 5.00 am and 1.00 pm on 21 July.
 
In Ghan Garaje, Gandharva and Gurtu will revoke Lord Indra (Rain God) with their music. In The exalted portals of Thumri, one can come closer to the three thumri queens —Naina Devi, Begum Akhtar and Girija Devi.
 
The three regale their audience with their thumri repertoire. It is a virtual treat for those who have never heard them before as Naina Devi sings thumri, Begum Akhtar dwells on joli and Girija Devi recites a dadra.

New Delhi:  In a proposal put forward by PMO to I&B Ministry, Narendra Modi has asked the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to exploit the possibility of using existing telecom towers for installing FM radio transmitters and existing Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) network to transmit satellite television signals.
 
Once implemented, the projects have the capacity to minimise additional cost arising due to the duplication of infrastructure. The idea is to use the spare capacity of additional infrastructure to carry additional services like, FM radio and satellite television signals.

Over 95 AIR FM transmitters being used for helping farmers

NEW DELHI: A total of 96 FM Transmitters of All India Radio will broadcast area specific agricultural programmes. The 30 minute radio transmission will take place six days a week in the evening, as part of the mass media initiative of the Agriculture Ministry.

Under the "Mass Media Support to Agriculture Extension" funded by the Ministry, audio and Video Spots and success stories are being aired through All India Radio, Doordarshan and Private Channels operating at the National and Regional Level. 

The Mass Media Support focuses on dissemination of modern agricultural techniques by involving experts from various fields like insurance, banking, credit for farmers, State Government schemes on agriculture/ fisheries/veterinary science/water and soil conservation/social forestry etc.

Even as details are being worked out by Prasar Bharati in consultation with the stakeholders for a Krishi channel as outlined by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his budget, no definite timeframe has been fixed for the start of the channel.

Information and Broadcasting Ministry sources said this will depend on availability of resources and manpower after the details have been worked out.

Work begins on new Vijayawada DD Kendra for Andhra Pradesh

NEW DELHI: The Government yesterday confirmed that it had received a proposal to create an interim set-up at the regional kendra of Doordarshan in Vijayawada to cater to the cultural and economic identities of Andhra Pradesh following bifurcation of the state.
 
Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar informed Parliament yesterday that the proposal had been received from the DD Kendra at Hyderabad to start, on an interim basis, a two hour terrestrial transmission from 5 pm to 7 pm everyday including a 15 minute Telugu news bulletin.
 
The rest 22 hours will be relayed from DDK Hyderabad, since DDK Vijayawada is currently only a programme generating facility (PGF).
 
Earlier, DD sources had told indianlevision.com that the aim would be to ultimately turn the Vijayawada Kendra into a 24-hour Kendra because the Hyderabad Kendra would become a part of the new state Telangana.

Minister of Information & Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar yesterday told the Lok Sabha that private FM channels will be allowed to air news bulletins from All India Radio (AIR), but in exactly the same format. The minister also elaborated that instead of putting audio clips of news sourced from AIR, the ministry was exploring the option of the FM radio presenter to read out the exact news matter in his or her voice.

But the FM industry is left disappointed. They claim this is anyway part of the Phase 3 licensing.

Reacting to the I&B minister's statement, Nisha Narayanan, COO, Red FM, said, "We welcome the announcement made by I&B minister Prakash Javadekar, on allowing private FM radio players to broadcast news. It is partially disappointing too as we are only allowed to air the news bulletins of AIR and in exactly the same format of AIR! So far AIR has been enjoying an unfair monopoly in the broadcast of news and current affairs which is a violation of the Supreme Court's 1995 judgement. While the current statement by I&B is definitely good news, we would hope that with time, the government will further relax the policy to give freedom to private FM channels to broadcast news independently."
