Identity, India's predilection towards pluralism and the stratification of the arts during the nationalist period were among topics that came up at a recent seminar.

It is a good sign that organisations generally more concerned with planning cultural events, have lately begun to encourage interactions on cultural issues – something that the average Indian has shied away from. Dialoguing culture, even though in an elementary fashion, has begun; one hopes for more intensive deliberations to follow. Under the aegis of Legends of India, a session on Indian cultural challenges in a globalised atmosphere, held at the India Habitat Centre, featured three eloquent speakers: Lalit Mansingh a retired foreign service bureaucrat who served as Indian Ambassador to the United States; Jawhar Sircar, at present heading Prasar Bharati as Director; and Professor Amrit Srinivasan, the scholar known for her seminal work on the Devadasi tradition.

Moderator Shanta Serbjeet Singh, Vice Chairperson, Sangeet Natak Akademi, flagged off the evening, voicing grave reservations about the Americanisation of global culture, or the "Macdonalisation of Society" as it has been called, threatening any sense of..................
