Free Prasar Bharati of Government Control

Source: The New Indian Express
Published Date: Dec 25, 2013

Last week, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting earned a well-deserved and stinging rebuke for its non-serious approach towards reforming Prasar Bharati. A parliamentary standing committee admonished the ministry for doing precious little on its advice to review the institutional framework of the public broadcaster in collaboration with the Sam Pitroda committee. Far from taking meaningful steps, it left the matter of improving Prasar Bharati's services entirely to its board and staff. Earlier this year, the government's much-touted effort to improve DD News turned out to be a damp squib after one of the high-profile editors, brought in specially for this purpose, quit his job in disgust.

All this is because of a basic problem which the government has not been able to resolve. It professes to free Doordarshan and All India Radio from.................

The cricket commentator who was the voice of Doordarshan while moonlighting as a doctor

Source: Mail Online India | By Tushar Bhaduri
PUBLISHED ON: 22 December 2013

He was the face of sports on Doordarshan (DD) in the pre-cable television era, and even though Narottam Puri is largely away from the airwaves now, his voice is still instantly recognisable.

An ENT specialist by profession, Puri has had a long stint behind the microphone for radio and TV.

His medical career was always his priority, otherwise one would have heard him a lot more even after private sports channels arrived.

A long innings

"I have no regrets. It has been a long innings. I got to travel a lot and enjoyed a lot. I treated it as a hobby," Puri said.

"I still appear on DD for Fourth Umpire. As the public broadcaster

Doordarshan to introduce 120 new channels by March 2014

Source: NexTV Asia Pacific | by Ananya Sundar
December 5, 2013

India's public broadcaster, which had earlier announced that it will be launching a new package offering 120 channels under its DTH platform. It has now confirmed that the channels will be available starting March 31, 2014.

Ranjan P Thakur, Additional Director General, Doordarshan said, "The reason why we are expanding to 120 channels is because we realise that the market is basically oriented towards regional channels and that's where the growth is. We have a large number of Hindi channels, but not enough regional channels. Hence, a larger bouquet of channels will enable us to get more regional channels, bringing in more regional viewers. He further said, "It will be an FTA platform and cater to the lower half of the society. A large number of channels will create more chances for the audience and also value for money since it will be free for life, which is a huge attraction."

Doordarshan currently has 20 million STBs in circulation. But it only offers 59 channels so far in its bouquet that includes 21 DD channels alone. It's hoping to add more content and lure more audiences for its platform.

Video: DD should be the first choice of the lower half of the society: Ranjan P Thakur

Source: exchange4media.com | Writer: Abid Hasan
Thursday, Dec 05,2013

Public broadcaster Doordarshan recently changed the name of its DTH platform from DD Direct Plus to DD's Free Dish. As explained by Ranjan P Thakur, Additional Director-General, Doordarshan, this has primarily been done keeping in mind the less affluent sections of the society.

"Our audiences are not so affluent in comparison to the subscribers of DTH platforms such as Tata Sky, Dish TV or Airtel. The idea is to attract more customers from the semi-urban and rural areas by playing on the trump card 'free' and emphasise that it is a free-to-air service for life," he added.

With digitisation panning out to Tier II and III cities after the metros, Doordarshan is now all set to...............

The non-coverage of the last historic test match of Sachin Tendulkar by Doordarshan entailed numerous explanations by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. Prasar Bharati - on its part - painfully chose not to telecast the mega event because of an unsupportive legal provision that financially favours the content right holders telecasting such sports events.

Every household watched the match of  Bharat Ratna Sachin Tendulkar with nostalgia and gratitude since the most respected cricketer decided to draw the curtains on his cricketing career representing the nation and relished the visual treat  gratefully acknowledging  "Sachin the Legend" in great measure.

The Sports Broadcasting (mandatory sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act,.........

Doordarshan is betting big on the direct-to-home (DTH) platform. The public broadcaster has completed 10 years in the DTH arena, having started with DD Direct in 2004, showcasing 17 channels.

With digitisation panning out to Tier II and III cities after metros, Doordarshan is now all set to increase the number of channels to about 120. The objective behind this increase is to gain maximum customers as there are a large number of free-to-air channels.
