Recapturing Hearts : Buniyaad returns to Doordarshan

Source: The Indian Express | EXPRESS FEATURES SERVICE :
Tue Jul 30 2013

The 1986-TV series Buniyaad returns to Doordarshan after 27 years. The period drama, that told the story of a family during Partition and its aftermath, drew out many iconic characters for an audience untouched by set-top boxes and pay channels. The plot revolves around a young Master Haveliram (Alok Nath) who falls in love and marries Lajwanti (Anita Kanwar), their family strife, struggles, separations and reunion. The story was written by journalist and author, Manohar Shyam Joshi, who had by then scripted TV's first "soap-opera" Hum Log. Directed by Ramesh Sippy, who the country knew as the director for Sholay, and Jyoti Sarup, it had numerous actors who launched their careers through this series. Kiran Juneja as Veeravali, Haveliram's sister, Dalip Tahil, as Bhushan, Haveliram's elder son, Soni Razdan as Lochan, Bhushan's wife, and Vinod Nagpal as Shyamlal, a family friend, among others were memorable for their roles. Its return to the small screen (not the first time) will be a walk down memory lane for the older audience, while for the current generation, it will be a showcase of life at its stoic best.

The show is being aired on Doordarshan every Thursday at 8.30 pm.

KOLKATA: The future of media is moving in the direction of the digital. Print, films, radio are all heading inexorably towards digitisation of their content and transmission. They would now have to chase their viewers, who are constantly on the move, rather than expect them to watch a fixed TV or sit at a PC desk.

This is what Jawhar Sircar, CEO, Prasar Bharati, told ET on a recent visit to Kolkata. "Hand-held devices (like smartphones and tablets) as the 'hard' and 'soft' ends of the new game and young Indians are not lagging behind. Like most others of their age all over the world, they have seized every new platform that the 'new media' offered as soon as they appeared, but connectivity often played spoilsport," said Sircar.

He went on to say webs and blogs, Facebook, Google Plus, Linkedin, YouTube and Twitter are now essential 'oxygen' for the youth, and "elders are also clambering on, for sheer survival".

Sircar said that "sky is the limit" for the size of the...................................................
