Chennai Vanoli Siruvar Sanga Peravai and Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) had organised a Children's Day programme 'Naalaam Naalaam Kuzhandhaigal Thirunaalaam', recently at P.S. Senior Secondary School, Mylapore. A number of dignitaries participated in the programme.
S. Venugopal Reddy, Former Station Director, All India Radio (AIR), Chennai, who spoke at the function pointed out that there is a decline in reading habit among the students. He further added that students should develop confidence to come up in life.
"Students should lead a disciplined life, and be determined in achieving all the goals. Respect your elders. You will be respected when you grow old. Teachers should encourage students to ask questions, and update them to ask questions," he added.
The Kuzhandai Illakiya Ratna Award, instituted by the forum , were given to poet Chella Ganapathy, Geja Gowri, All India Radio, Chennai, playwright S.A. Balaraman, Appu Siruvar Sangam, founder, Hema, and Professor Hema Santhana Raman, for their contribution in the field of literary works and programmes, and social work for children.
A variety of cultural programmes were staged, including a folk dance on national unity, a short-play advocating abolishment of child labour, by school students and members of Thiruvalluvar Gurukala Siruvar Sangam and Vanoli Siruvar Sanga Peravai, enthralling the audience.
C. H. Radhakrishna Prasad, Chief Regional Manager, Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), Chennai, spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, storyteller and veteran dramatist 'Vanoli Anna' Koothapiran welcomed the gathering.
