A new 'wave' for ancient literature

Celebrating the works of the earliest known Sanskrit dramatist, Bhasa, AIR Pune, will be airing a special audio serial scripted by a BORI scholar

In a bid to bring in a new ‘wave’ of interest into precious ancient literature, a scholar associated with the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI) is seeing the culmination of more than a year of work — a special audio serial scripted by him based on the works of the earliest known Sanskrit dramatist, Bhasa, is to be aired by the All India Radio (AIR), Pune starting April 7, a little more than 100 years after the litterateur’s plays were re-discovered by Indian scholar T Ganapatishashtri in 1912.

Dr Shreenand Bapat has scripted the 13-episode audio serial based on Bhasa’s works

Dr Shreenand Bapat, assistant curator at BORI and a PhD in Panini grammar, who undertook this project in his personal capacity, said, “Bhasa served as an inspiration to great poet laureates like Kalidasa, Dandi and Banbhtta.
