Prasar Bharti mulling putting famous speeches online

New Delhi, Feb 13 (PTI) History buffs may be in for a treat as public broadcaster Prasar Bharati is considering putting up famous speeches by Indian leaders, like Jawaharlal Nehru's iconic freedom at midnight speech, present in its archives, online so that people can access and hear them.

"We have a lot of digitised material on the speeches of our national leaders. These are not saleable commodities, you don't sell the family's heritage.

Prasar Bharati to strengthen FM services

Public service broadcaster Prasar Bharati Thursday announced that it will strengthen its FM services all over the country and Vividh Bharti will be made available on FM in many centres.

Addressing a function here on World Radio Day, Prasar Bharati chief Jawhar Sircar said that as a part of expansion of FM services, AIR FM Gold and FM Rainbow will be extended to all metros and other cities by the end of this year.

He said that Vividh Bharti channel will be made available on FM in four metro centres along with 40 other centres.

Provision on panel overseeing Prasar Bharati functions likely to be deleted

The Information & Broadcasting Ministry is considering a proposal for amending the Prasar Bharati Act to remove a provision which mandates creation of a committee to oversee the functions of the public broadcaster as the standing committee on IT is playing the same role.

In a written reply in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha, I&B minister Manish Tewari said that Prasar Bharati Act, 1990 has provided for accountability of the broadcaster under section 13. He said this section mandates constitution of a parliamentary committee to oversee the functioning of Prasar Bharati.

“The Group of Ministers (GoM) on Prasar Bharati has recommended for deletion of section 13 from the Prasar Bharati Act 1990 on the grounds that the standing committee on Information Technology is playing the same role. Accordingly, a proposal for amendment of the Act inter-alia for deletion of section 13 is under consideration,” Mr.Tewari said.

World Radio Day: Remembering Akashvani

Few people may be aware that the U.N. has declared the 13^th of February as World Radio Day, because the resolution is just two years old. It was on this day in 1946 that the United Nations Radio was established, and though belated, the humble radio has finally been given its pride of place. It helped connect billions through very affordable receivers and can, therefore, claim to be prime ‘democratiser’ of infotainment in the modern world. What began in the early part of the nineteenth century with physicists like Faraday and Maxwell working on exciting theories and experiments in electro-magnetic waves reached its peak when Hertz (remember ‘mega-hertz’?), Branly, Tesla, de Mousa, Braun and other pioneers demonstrated that ‘wireless telegraphy’ was actually feasible. In November 1894, our own Jagadish Chandra Bose literally ‘rang a bell’ in Calcutta without any connecting wire, while six months later, on 7th of May 1895 (Russia’s ‘Radio Day’), Alexander Popov displayed the first ‘radio set’.

        But it was Marconi who obtained the first patent in March 1897 and immediately set up his British Marconi Company and also the first radio station in the world, on the Isle of Wight. This Italian would move fast and far in life, and in 1909 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics, with Karl Braun. But it was San Jose, California, that showed the world that it was destined to become the ‘Silicon Valley’, when that very year, Charles Herrold constructed the first really operational radio station. As a farmer’s son, he was familiar with ‘broad-casting’, i.e., the scattering of seeds by hand, and he gave us this term to tele-communications. Radios would soon became the lifeline for ships out on the seas, more so during distress, and as expected, it was developed in the First World War to communicate with troops on the battle-front.

It was Guglielmo Marconi who obtained the first patent on radio sets in March 1897. That very year, Charles Herrold constructed the first operational radio station. Radio soon became the lifeline for ships, more so during distress, and the technology was developed in World War I to communicate with troops on the battlefront.

As soon as the war ended, civilian use picked up. Detroit, Michigan issued the first known news broadcast. KDKA in Pittsburgh went on air on November 2, 1920, with the presidential election results, heralding commercial broadcasting. Several broadcasters in the US followed, but................

All India Radio produces special programs for World Radio Day

MUMBAI: While FM stations all over the country are preoccupied with programming shows for Valentine's Day, All India Radio has different plans to celebrate World Radio Day which falls on 13 February.

On air, AIR will delight their listeners with special programs on their various channels confirmed Lakshmi Shankar Bajpai, Deputy Director General, All india Radio Delhi. He said, "On 13 February, FM Gold will air a show from 10.000 pm to 12.00 am which will take the listener on a tour about radio; history, relevance, phases and inputs from veteran broadcasters, apart from film music. Another program is a morning show on FM Rainbow which will be aired from7.00 am to 9.00 am which will feature many other veteran media personalities as guest speakers."

'Race slur' charge on DD anchor

New Delhi, Feb. 11: A group of Delhi University teachers and students hailing from the Northeast have alleged racial abuse by a Doordarshan anchor at the recording of a talk show on race bias.

Prasar Bharati is probing whether Shanivar Charcha anchor Neelam Sharma, producer Subhash Jain and DD staff shouted at and “insulted” the complainants, partly because they were “not fluent in Hindi”.

DU group complains about Doordarshan's racial bias

NEW DELHI: Opinion is divided on the issue of racist remarks leading to the unfortunate death of 19-year-old Arunachali student Nido Tania in the capital, but a new incident seems to hint at racial bias even in government agencies. A group of Delhi University teachers and students have accused the national broadcaster, Doordarshan, of being discourteous towards them and passing insensitive remarks after inviting them for a show. The group boycotted it in disgust.

As it appears, the teachers and students were invited to participate in a talk show on racial discrimination and the northeast on Friday. "But when we reached Mandi House, we were told that the theme was cultural diversity of India and national integration. Also, they wanted us to be part of the audience as they had already selected six panellists," said Jeremiah Pame, who teaches at Delhi College of Arts & Commerce. He's the elder brother of IAS officer Armstrong Pame, who had grabbed headlines last year for building a 100km road in a remote part of Manipur at his own initiative.
