Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday inaugurated an All India Radio (AIR) FM station in Amethi.
According to the AIR, the FM Rainbow station will offer digital sound quality to the listeners of Amethi, which is a Congress stronghold and currently represented by Rahul Gandhi.

Prasar Bharti has been allocated grants-in-aid of Rs 2,331.58 crore in the Interim Budget 2014, as per media reports. This is a marginal increase from the Rs 2,098.56 crore allocated in 2013-14. The Government has made a provision of Rs 200 crore from internal and extra-budgetary resources for Prasar Bharti, while the total plan outlay for broadcasting is Rs 641.58 crore. The funds include allocations of salary and related expenditure of Prasar Bharti employees.
In December last year, the Government finally put in place a plan to set up the Prasar Bharti Recruitment Board to meet the acute manpower shortages that have been plaguing the national broadcaster for years. In a circular passed last year, Prasar Bharti CEO Jawhar Sircar estimated that nearly 15,000 posts in various capacities were vacant.

NEW DELHI: A total of 134 FM stations of All India Radio have been set up during the last five years, even as the government prepares to commence the e-auction for 839 private FM channels.
Of these, 57 are Vividh Bharati which is currently on medium wave, with Prasar Bharati CEO announcing last week that these should be put on FM all over the country. Forty-three centres will get primary channels.

KARWAR: The FM station of All India Radio, Karwar, has completed two decades of successful service. The FM station which began broadcasting the programmes on February 13, 1994, has acquired immense popularity in the area despite many odds.
The station was sanctioned to Karwar by the Union government when FM technology was gradually gaining popularity in the country. Devaray Naik, then MP from Uttara Kannada, played an important role in Karwar getting the station. The main aim was to popularize Kannada in the border area, said Prabhakar Rane, who was a minister when it was inaugurated.

India is in dire need of broadcast autonomy, especially in the form of a truly autonomous, even if state-assisted, public service broadcaster. This was a promise made by Nehru to Parliament in 1948. But it is yet to be redeemed. The post-Emergency 1977-78 broadcast autonomy committee, in its report “Akash Bharati”, presented a blueprint for autonomy. That was dumbed down by the Janata government and a Prasar Bharati bill was finally enacted in 1990, brought into force in 1997 and emasculated almost ab initio.

Opposition legislators Tuesday walked out of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly demanding the setting up of a Dogri television channel in the state.
Amid din and confusion, legislators of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Panthers Party and the Jammu Shakti Morcha staged the protest in the house now holding its winter session here.
They demanded the Dogri television channel on the pattern of DD Kashmir, which beams signals through the Doordarshan satellite platform.

LUCKNOW: Central Bureau of Investigation judge Surendra Singh on Monday sentenced former Doordarshan director Prabhu Jhingranwith three years jail term in connection with a bribery case. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1.10 lakh on the convict.
The court, however, released him on interim bail to enable him to approach the high court against the verdict. The court observed in its order that a public servant taking bribe was a serious offence against the society as a whole. No leniency can be shown to such offenders, it added.
