Journalist B.G. Verghese has called for the country’s public broadcaster, Prasar Bharati, to be strengthened and granted greater autonomy.
He was speaking at a national conference on media ethics and social responsibility conducted by the communications department of St. Joseph’s College here on Friday.
Criticising mainstream journalism outlets for the extent to which they have compromised their editorial content to favour market forces, he said that editors have become “an unnecessary nuisance” in an environment where owners and advertisers provide colour to events. Mr. Verghese, however, differed from many commentators on the subject of social media as a truly democratic alternative to a profit driven media.
Referring to the role played by social media in stoking the recent riots at Muzaffarnagar and the exodus from Bangalore of people from the Northeast India last year, he said that the anarchy and the lack of accountability that defines social media makes it unsustainable as a credible news outlet.
It was against this backdrop that he said that Prasar Bharati is one of the last media outlets that can perform the public interest function of journalism.
He conceded that there is severe government interference in the functioning of the public broadcaster, but said that this problem could easily be overcome by placing certain safeguards that ensure autonomy. “Prasar Bharati has long been a trumpet of the government. But it need not be like that. The Supreme Court too enjoys great autonomy despite being closely linked to the government,” he said.
Earlier, the former Chief Justice M.N. Venkatachaliah said that technology in the 21st century will play a crucial role in enabling a truly free press that is not informed by petty commercial and political concerns.
Head of the Department of Communication of the St. Joseph’s College Francis Arackal expressed dismay at the fact that Tarun Tejpal had taken Tehelka down with him.
The Hindu Education Plus was the official media partner of the conference.

How the game metamorphosed into a 'commercial property'

MANGALORE, NOV. 13: Ask any Indian how cricket was three decades ago, the answer will be live radio commentaries or grainy black-and-white Doordarshan images.

Cut to 2013. High-definition telecast on dedicated channels or tweets are the ways youngsters 'experience' cricket. Now, the cricket fan analyses every single move of the player through the technology-dominated TV content. At the same time, the fan also accesses YouTube cricket streaming and Twitter and Facebook updates on smartphones or tablets. Doordarshan switching to satellite

Source: Advanced Television | By Chris Forrester

India's public broadcaster Doordarshan is to switch some of its resources from terrestrial to satellite in an attempt to boost coverage in particular in the North East of the country.

Prasar Bharati's CEO Jawhar Sircar told reporters that Doordarshan needed to rethink how its transmission networks could be re-engineered to improve both TV and FM radio services into the region. Sircar said that terrestrial transmissions could not be completely abandoned but he was seeking more government cash in order to increase satellite transmissions.

One option was to cut All India Radio's existing shortwave transmissions and improving reception of FM broadcasts, which could also be received on smart phones.

India to Test DRM Receivers for EAS

Source: radioandmusic.com | on 11.04.2013

India's National Disaster Management Authority and its Digital Radio Mondiale chapter will test digital receivers in Gujarat to examine how they will perform during a disaster, according to radioandmusic.com.

"Gujarat is surrounded by sea thus has many fishermen so NDMA wants to use the receiver more specifically for them," said DRM Consortium honorary Chairman Yogendra Pal. He says that digital transmitters are already functional there but that they haven't yet decided the exact area in Gujarat where the tests will take place.

The receiver's approximate cost is around Rs 5000 (about US $81), but Pal hopes that increasing popularity will lead to a price reduction.

According to reports, the Indian DRM chapter has also held discussions with car manufacturers, including Maruti, Toyota and Volkswagen. The group is also in talks with mobile and kitchen radio manufacturers.

All India Radio currently plans to employ 36 DRM high-end professional monitoring receivers that would be used in radio stations throughout the country.

New Delhi, Nov. 1: To ensure that the maximum number of people can watch Sachin Tendulkar's farewell matches, Prasar Bharati is hoping to strike a deal with STAR Sports Network, the official broadcaster of the India-West Indies Test series.

"There is great interest among people to watch the legend play for the last time. Majority of TV viewers, especially terrestrial viewers, in the country will miss the grand sporting event as they have access to only Doordarshan. We want to make the matches available… negotiations with the private broadcaster are on and we hope to reach an amiable solution soon," a senior Prasar official said.
