EC at it again, out to ban pre-poll surveys

Source: Deccan Herald | Premchand Palety, Oct 27, 2013

Critics say poll panel move is an insult to voter's intellect, no proof to say surveys sway electors.

In 2002, C fore conducted  exit poll for Doordarshan, the  only government  channel in India and also the most viewed in those days, for elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Manipur. The election was in four phases and for every phase we conducted exit poll. Our predictions were on the dot. The seats and vote share we predicted  for different parties in different phases  were very close to the actual results much in contrast with other channels. The Doordarshan officials    were very happy.

But to my surprise , few days after the election results were out, Doordarshan took a decision not to conduct any election survey. The decision was taken because.........

‘Bringing up an an elephant to dance takes time’

Source: Civil Society Online

Civil Society News, New Delhi

For someone who has clocked 60 and spent most of those years in the Government of India's bureaucracy, Jawhar Sircar packs surprisingly high levels of energy and purpose. It is a little before eight in the evening when we start talking and he remains in full flow till well past nine. People say he likes to talk. That is no doubt true, but our sense is he is seriously hooked to the idea of being en effective CEO and turning Prasar Bharati into a credible public broadcaster.

Prasar Bharati's offices are every bit sarkari and gloomy, tacky too, but Jawhar Sircar is not. He is witty, perceptive and intelligently outlandish. A liberal orientation and an understanding of India's diversity are wonderful attributes for the head of a public interest broadcaster to have – and he has both in good measure.

Sircar's mission as CEO is to make Prasar Bharati – which means...............

Riding the waves

Updated: October 17, 2013 18:33 IST

U. Srinivas was at his best at the Akashvani Sangeet Sammelan in the Capital.

All India Radio recently organised a Carnatic music concert of mandolin by U. Srinivas as part of the Akashvani Sangeet Sammelan-2013, in the auditorium of Bharatiya Vidhya Bhavan, New Delhi. This year, AIR organised such concerts in Carnatic and Hindustani styles in 30 different places across the country. The recordings of these concerts are scheduled to be broadcast on the radio daily starting this Saturday (October 19), till December 11. The recordings are made before an invited audience.

The overwhelming participation of Delhi's music lovers during Srinivas' concert, as well as in Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar's Hindustani vocal recital that took place just before it, proved yet again that the Sangeet Sammelan of AIR remains an important event in their calendar. The concert was also reminiscent of the another programme "Isai Saral", conducted by AIR Chennai regularly, where concerts are audio and video recorded before an invited audience and later broadcast over the radio and telecast on Doordarshan. One is tempted to suggest to AIR to consider replicating this programme in Delhi and other important stations too.

The rich tonal quality produced by Srinivas, the pioneer in......................

On his maiden trip to India in 1934, Walter Kaufmann, then 27, arrived with a return ticket in hand. The German musician had clearly not anticipated that he would end up spending 12 years in the country during which he would compose one of the most iconic tunes that rules Indian airwaves to date — All India Radio's (AIR) signature jingle.

"Very little was known about the composer of the tune which airs on Akashvani every morning," says Amrit Gangar, film historian and curator. He spent days at the William and Gayle Cook Music library at the Indiana University researching on Kaufmann's connection with Indian cinema. NEW DELHI: The Hurriyat call to boycott the Zubin Mehta concert was defeated by Kashmiris in a unique way — by switching on their television sets. A TAM survey has shown that an overwhelming 64% of people in Srinagar watched the live telecast of the classical music concert. In fact, insiders say that the call for boycott and strike, which led to shops, schools and establishments being forced to shut, may have even helped increase viewership.

The survey by audience measurement agency TAM was conducted on behalf of Prasar Bharati to gauge the response for the music maestro Zubin Mehta conducted 'Ehsaas-e-Kashmir' concert. The results show that 64% of the adult population of Srinagar tuned in to DD's telecast of the concert, and watched it for an average of 55 minutes. The data also revealed that more youth watched the concert telecast than those in the upper age bracket (that is above 35 years).

The radio was an important fixture during my grandfather's life. Returning from London after studying medicine, he brought back a radio for my grandma. She acknowledged the gift by crafting an elaborately embroidered cover for the radio. For all practical purposes, it was my grandfather's radio.

He was All India Radio's most faithful listener ever. He would listen to Hindi, English and Bengali news in the mornings. The newspaper vendor would soon throw two rolls of newspapers that on our doorstep. Sanskrit news would start as he settled down to read the newspapers. In the evening he would listen to the news on his rocking chair one last time before sleeping.

For him, listening to the news was an active process. Stopping everything else, he would sit down on a chair, look at the radio and solemnly hear the news. Having experienced the horrors of the partition, he did not want to be caught unawares ever again.

Growing up, the radio was no longer the prime news provider for us. Dad would read the newspaper while my mother listened to the songs played on.................

Source: IndianTelevision.com | 08 October 2013 02:40 pm

NEW DELHI: Renowned actor Naseeruddin Shah has strongly supported the telecast of a series on visually impaired and blind achievers on Doordarshan saying "people need to break away from the societal stereotypes and commonly held perceptions about disability and success or happiness."

The actor, who acted as a blind school principal in the Sai Paranjpye-directed film Sparsh and is presenting the series Nazar ya Nazariya on Doordarshan, said, "India has over 63 million visually impaired people, of which around eight million are completely blind. Most of these people are often marginalised, not given equal opportunities for education, career and employment; they are also ill informed, and not stimulated to explore their potential. The blind and visually impaired community is often viewed as liabilities as opposed to potential human resource for a developing country."

An unusual excavation of radio and TV documentaries from the Films Division archive

On 5 October, Films Division's weekly event FD Zone will bring back memories of the days when all we had to while away the time were All India Radio and Doordarshan.

FD Zone hosts weekly showings of specially programmed documentaries and short films from a variety of sources, including the Films Division archive and independent film-makers, at the government organization's headquarters in Mumbai. The latest programme covers a fascinating set of documentaries from the FD vault on the history of Indian broadcasting in the decades before satellite television. The 10 films, which were made between the 1950s and the 1970s, provide information and insights into the production of government propaganda as well as the cinematic artistry that survived the agenda to showcase the state's achievements.

ESPN loses ad battle against Doordarshan

The Delhi High Court in India has ruled that sports broadcaster ESPN has to share live signals of cricket matches with public broadcaster Doordarshan without broadcasting advertisements. The problem arose in April of this year when Prasar Bharti, which is the umbrella organisation that Doordarshan comes under, had said that it was not in a position to air signals that it deemed unclean.

ESPN to share ad-free feed with Doordarshan

Source: The Indian Express | Agencies
Friday, October 04, 2013

Dismissing an argument by sports channel ESPN, the Delhi High court on Thursday has held that "whosoever airs a live television broadcast of sporting events of national importance must share the same without any advertisements inserted with Prasar Bharti." On April 6, in a communication to ESPN, Prasar Bharati had said "it is not in a position to share the live signals which are not clean" and insisted that the channel provide the feed of the matches without any commercial. ESPN Software India Pvt Ltd in its plea had argued that it did not have control over the "Commercial inserts" that were attached to the feed received by it from the event organizers. ESPN had further argued that its "obligation under the law was to share the live broadcast signal as it was received" by it from the sporting event organizer; and since the feed received by it contain certain advertisements by the organizer of the sporting event, their obligation were limited to share the signal as it is. A bench of Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justice Pradeep Nandrajog dismissed ESPN's plea asking for a direction to Prasar Bharati not to insist on the live signal of international cricket matches of India without any commercial.

Ulhas Kashalkar gave a facelift to the annual AIR Sangeet Sammelan in New Delhi.

There was a time when music lovers across the country used to look forward to the All India Radio's annual Sangeet Sammelan as it showcased top artistes with great pride and fanfare. It was a big event for the artiste, the organiser and the listener. Concerts would be held for invited audience and later broadcast by all the stations of the AIR. Over the years, like every other institution, AIR too has witnessed a steep decline and is a pale shadow of its former self. Sangeet Sammelans seem to have become an annual ritual to be gone through somehow without any enthusiasm and commitment.

The AIR's lackadaisical approach was evident last week in the way it organised the Sangeet Sammelan concert in the Capital featuring well-known.....................

There was plenty of variety at this edition of the Akashvani Sangeeth Sammelan

This year's edition of Akashvani Sangeeth Sammelan was simultaneously conducted at AIR's 33 kendras on September 28. The Chennai All India Radio Multi-track Recording Studio Auditorium featured three interesting programmes. It was, indeed, an odd and exotic sequence, as the concerts included a sublime classical Hindustani vocal, a vibrant thavil laya vinyasam and a melodious flute recital.

Dr. Mohan Kumar Darekar from Pune showcased two ragas in detail -- Behag and Kaushik Kanada. Mohan Kumar has a captivating voice and has been trained in the Gwalior and Benaras gharanas.

His opening phrases of Behag were instantly appealing; since the raga offers extraordinary potential to bring out its myriad shades, Darekar did not miss any opportunity to showcase them through his vilambit khayal in ek taal, 'Bhaje More Payal Janana' and segued into durit kaal with exciting akaras and swaras for the catch phrase 'Jashomathi Julabi Raina.'

With the same ease, style and depth he expounded Kaushik Kananda and ................

Prasar push for freedom from control

Source: defenceforumindia.com

New Delhi, Oct. 1: Prasar Bharati has requested the Centre to free the news sections of Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR) from bureaucratic control and get them run by media professionals instead.

The proposal, part of a larger plan aimed at securing greater economy for the public broadcaster, was made in a resolution the Prasar Bharati board passed recently. It said the ministry should help ensure professionalism by amending rules to permit professionals to join as director-generals and additional-director generals of AIR and DD.

Another issue was "dual control" over the news divisions. This, the board resolution said, happens because of the total control of the ministry over Indian Information Service (IIS) officers — a specialised cadre of bureaucrats who run the divisions — "without the scantiest of regard for Prasar Bharati".

Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar asserted that the goal was maximum autonomy. "We are.....................

Jawahar Sircar says his earnest request to ministry was to help strengthen public institutions

Prasar Bharati Chairman Jawahar Sircar on Tuesday said there was no rift between him and the information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry, following a controversy over a letter he had written to the ministry.

"We are a family and I only wrote to him (I&B minister) about some of the operational concerns. There are no rifts and the minister is a constitutional authority," Sircar said on the sidelines of an event held to celebrate 75 years of All India Radio's four regional operations.

Last week, Sircar had written to the I&B ministry expressing his displeasure with it after the ministry questioned the board about decisions taken by the broadcaster.
