Class act
Doordarshan must buck the trend of TRP-chasing to become again a platform for award-winning Indian cinema, writes C.S. VENKITESWARAN.
The most unfortunate effect of the 'opening up of the sky' was upon our public service broadcasting. Unable to withstand competition from private channels, Doordarshan itself seemed to lose faith in its strengths and began aping private television in programming and content. Instead of setting benchmarks in quality, authenticity and commitment to the non-negotiable values of democracy and pluralism, it began to see itself as just another player in the market, vying like all others to capture eyeballs. It was caught between State and Market, and mired in an identity crisis of sorts. In a cursory comparison of the quality of tele-serials and other cultural programmes then (culture and entertainment didn't mean just 'cinema' then) and now, the fall is strikingly glaring. Serials like Buniyaad, Nukkad, Tamas, etc. were narratives that connected with the collective memories and aspirations of a nation, compared to the saas-bahu variety we are flooded with now. Likewise, in cultural programming too, there was always an attempt to keep in mind the linguistic and socio-cultural diversity of our country.
One such major initiative of Doordarshan was its telecast of award-winning films during the weekends and, most................

DD News and Samachar beat pvt news channels: Prasar Bharati CEO Jawahar Sircar
NEW DELHI: Indian pubcaster DD has been seen as a laggard in the Indian broadcasting space, way behind private satellite TV channels. Its news service DD News has been spoken about in high light as being more news driven than other private channels which tend to focus on more trivial matters in their chase for TRPS. But this despite it is perceived as something audiences don't tune in to.
Shattering that "so-called myth" is Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar. Speaking to indiantelevision.com Sircar says that The DD Newsnight on Doordarshan News in English topped all news channels for five weeks at a stretch from week 14 (24 March-30 March) to week 18 (21-27 April) in TAM's weekly ratings for 2013.

Making ‘AIR’ waves is Asha Jhabhak’s current passion
13th May 2013 12:00 AM
As a budding RJ, Asha Jhabhak, a first-year MA communication student of MOP Vaishnav College, Chennai, is very enthusiastic about her experience in All India Radio (AIR), Chennai. Her interest in this field was kindled when her father used to listen to the radio when they travelled in the car together. "I was so fascinated that I always kept tuning to frequencies, which played feet tapping numbers," she says. She started calling up radio shows and requested her favourite songs.
There was a point when she used to stand in front of the mirror, hosting imaginary shows. This deepened her resolve to become an RJ. Asha got to know about AIR, through her colleague when she was working in C2. "When he shared his experience as an RJ, I let him know my passion for the hot seat and auditioned at AIR," says the.................

All India Radio DRM implementation on track
MUMBAI: With All India Radio (AIR) on the fast track to transition to digital, the implementation of the receivers is also moving quickly with around seven DRM transmitters stated to be operational by July 2013.
A meeting was held by AIR with the radio receiver manufacturers in Akashwani Bhawan New Delhi, which was also attended by eight receiver manufacturers, two chip manufacturers and representatives of the DRM Consortium.
The director general and engineer-in-chief of All India Radio and the joint secretary of Ministry of Information & Broadcasting addressed the participants and outlined the progress of installation of the digital (DRM) transmitters.
It was noted that the 1000 kW DRM transmitter in Rajkot was already operational and six more including the 1000 kW transmitter at Chinsurah (Kolkata) and six 20 kW DRM transmitters in Delhi, Chennai, Guwahati, Tawang, Barmer and Bikaner would be operational by July 2013.
The schedule of implementation for the remaining 27 DRM transmitters which have already been ordered was also announced.
The meeting also highlighted the predicted coverage area for each of these transmitters and once the transmitters are operational in August 2014, they would be enabled to provide coverage to over 70 per cent of the population in the country.
The joint secretary explained that the Government of India has made huge investment in the installation of state-of-art DRM transmitters. Therefore, receiver manufacturers and distributors should come forward so that digital receivers at affordable prices can be made available across the country in order to reap the benefits of digitization.
Receiver manufacturers welcomed the initiative and assured that they would take it forward. They recommended that All India Radio should mount a publicity campaign to outline the advantages and features of digital radio which are not available on the analogue receivers. They further advised that DRM reception on mobile phones should also be ensured. On the issue of cost it was mentioned that digital radio chips are now available and as in the case of mobile phones, the prices will fall sharply once there is an increase in demand.
A meeting was held by AIR with the radio receiver manufacturers in Akashwani Bhawan New Delhi, which was also attended by eight receiver manufacturers, two chip manufacturers and representatives of the DRM Consortium.

In Doordarshan, ratings infuse a lease of energy
A desktop screen open with an eye on the flurry of e-mails; signing a sheaf of papers; taking calls; fixing meetings; and attending to visitors, CEO of Prasar Bharati (PB) Jawahar Sircar defies the stereotypes — of a lazy 'sarkariyat' and bureaucratism — associated with the organisation he heads.
Mr. Sircar's energy appears to have translated into ratings for Doordarshan, where he admits, even employees were "giving up." He passes on a sheet, showing DD News as having the highest General Rating Points in three out of four recent weeks. DD National is among the top four general entertainment channels "with a fraction of the budget the big players have."
The ratings are contentious. Prasar Bharati itself filed a....................

On a musical journey of Bollywood
The recently concluded Centenary Film Festival, celebrating 100 years of cinema hosted a mesmerising musical feast to give a glimpse into the evolution and glorious journey of Indian Cinema. And who better than the country's first national orchestra band Vaadya Vrind which performed complex and lilting compositions from Hindi films down the decades. A unit of All India Radio (AIR), Vaadya Vrind stole the hearts of each one present at Siri Fort that evening.
With more than 30 musicians on stage, the Vaadya Vrind team proved those wrong who maintain that only films can explore unravelled emotions. With their soulful recitals from compositions by Pt Ravi Shanker to a medley of Hindi film numbers that our soul has absorbed since the time we first encountered them in Bollywood films, Vaadya Vrind successfully brought alive images which lie hidden in our collective
memory.
